If it's a front Disco axle then it could be either a later bearing/bearing type or the older bush/bearing type. Discos changed over 1992ish I think. Defenders also used a bush/bearing setup until 1994 or so but it was a different bush to the Disco/RRC one.

Best to find the lineage of the Disco axle (an axle number off the tube, VIN of the original vehicle, or by identifying the types of shafts/diffs fitted - assuming they are original to the axle) and then ordering your parts based upon that.

This is the bush/bearing kit for earlier Disco 1:

DA3164 | Swivel Kit (with 8mm swivel seal) - front axle to JA032850

And this is the bearing/bearing kit for later Disco 1:

Discovery 1 From JA032851 DA3165 Island 4x4 - Specialists in Land Rover and Range Rover Parts and accessories for all models. UK and worldwide mail order.

Note: Those are the kits including the new swivel ball, which you may not require. This is just to show you the difference in the upper pin/bearing setup.

discos had twin bearings from the start ,unless abs and then thats different to def, only the defender had a top bush until 300 tdi

Any pointers as to where the number would be on the axle?

Its got 24 shafts/diffs/axles

i found mine use petrol to clean up the axle.

axle serial number is on the long axle tube, just above the horizontal weldline :)

do a rebuild as your in there and fit discs...then you know where you stand.

the bi-hex bolts on swivel balls to axle could do with a soak in valvoline relase fluid for a day or two.i fitted black coated balls with good results

place the hub in a wheel on the floor after removing to get discs off.
and ffs fit all the seals and plates to the balls before fitting to axle just remember to do em in reverse if yer get wot i mean.

Definitely. I replaced my swivel pins recently and took the ball off, as made it far easier than cutting the seals and then supergluing together as has been suggested elsewhere. I replaced the ball to axle bolts too, they were'nt in the best shape and by the time (touch wood) i have to replace pins again they'd well and truely goosed.
