Wheel wobble

Just taken it into my mates garage to have a look see and it is the swivel pin bearings, near side is the most fooked!

On the plus side apart from the panard rod being on the wrong way round and the swivel pin death wobble he couldn't fault it and he's a landy owner and mechanic so I'm well happy! :)

In which case if you can't do the work yourself, make sure it's done by someone who will let you watch them. It's the only way to learn.

If you read up on it and look at Busters guides, they're excellent, you'll be fine. Almost any job you can do is a piece of **** and it does save a shed load of cash if anything goes wrong so don't be afraid to get your hands dirty.

I think Buster did a guide on swivel ball replacement, might be able to find it on repairmylandrover.co.uk.

Oh and get yourself a haynes manual. They're ****e for doing any bigger jobs but for small things they do come in handy.

i believe repairmylandrover nicked all of busters work without permission. You can find his stuff here

After a disscusion with my mechanic today and after a ring round for to borrow some a jack and axle stands and some space off a friend of mine in the forest I might be having a go at this my self!

Just a couple of questions though........

I know my landy has disco axles on it but have no idea which type and I've been told this will affect which parts I have to order, does any one know how I find out which type of axle I have???

What parts do I need to order? I've been told the swivel pin bearings are worn but it could be fixed by removing the shimms or I might have to do the whole lot but what does that actually mean in terms of the bits I need to get?
Also the drag link ends need doing, are these the same as track rod ends?

And finally what tools will I actually need to do the job?

Do you know ehere the swivel pins are? If so, you will need either a spanner or a socket to remove the top pin. Should you find that there are any shims in there, take a couple out and tighten the pin back up. Usually that will be sufficient, as the bottom bearing will be permenantly immersed in either EP 90 or one-shot grease.
The drag link being the bit of bar that connects both steering hubs together has a track rod end at each end of it, but remember that one has a left-hand thread whilst the other is right-handed.

A set of Stilsons usually helps!

fender has a swan at one end and the pita droparm ball joint. think you have got the terms muddled with the track rod.

So does that mean I can hook the shimms out with out jacking the landy up??

That's a piece of **** to do, just make sure you're turning it the right way to unscrew it at the drop arm end so you don't waste hours more than you need to like I did  I felt like a #### but its easy.

pulling it apart was fine, it was getting that sodding spring to stay in place when i pushed the plate up and stuck the circlip on.. slip.. slip... slip

*AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAH*

Then to find the droparm lip was worn, so the boot slipped off and then the bottom fell out after a year

I may have moaned about this before. The disco setup seems good. :tea:
