Disco 2 Wheel nuts again

So following my searches on the wheel nuts on a discovery 2 it seems that the covers only come off on the locking nuts using a special black plastic tool?

Does this mean that I will need two different size sockets or does the locking nut compensate for the difference between the locking nut and the remaining nuts with covers?

Seems like a daft question but would rather ask it than be caught short in the middle of no where.

The "key" has a hex head the same size as the rest of the nuts iirc 27mm.

But if you have not tried it yet , make sure it fits all the locking nut wheel nuts, they have a habit of distorting on the key slots. Plus the Keys can distort and crack. A replacement locking nut key can be found in the bay for a bout a tenner.

Only the 1 locking nut on each wheel has a cover. You don't need the special tool a pair of long nosed pliers will do. Then you just need the locking nut tool that @neilly mentioned and the stock wheel brace or equivalent socket which fits the normal wheel nuts and the locking tool.

Always like to fully research before asking repetitive questions. Plenty of info on google and the forum about the covers but not about the potential socket size compensation.

As @neilly has said, the "nut" end of the locking wheel nut key is the same size as the other wheel nuts.
I have a second key just in case the first one gets lost or damaged, the code for the key is stamped on it and you'll need to quote that letter if you order a new one.
The covers can come off if they haven't been replaced properly, I usually give them a tap with a little rubber hammer just to be sure, but I do keep a couple of spare ones in the glove box.
The second key and a spare cover remover is kept in the case with my battery rattle gun so I don't have to disturb the emergency kit in the car. I also keep a written note of the key code letter with the vehicle documentation.

The black plastic thing designed to remove the locking wheel nut covers is SO CRAP! How they dared supply it! Imagine someone with no other tools trying to change a wheel on a dark rainy night! If it had been made of metal would it really have killed Land Rover? And it is no better for Disco 2 than it was for Disco 1!
 
When did you last hear of alloys getting nicked ?? Buy 4 new standard nuts and get rid of the locking nuts (apart from spare). They are a pain the arse.

Frankly, I've never had a problem with it, just push it on firmly and give a quick tug. Obviously you must be using the wrong end.
"obviously" NOOOOOOOO! I used it correctly until eventually first one then another of the plastic "fingers" lost the tiny tip that is supposed to grip the metal edge of the wheel nut cover. I tried all sorts of things to make it grip, none of them worked. In the end I gave up on it and used pliers/molegrips whatever. The one on my Disco 2 already had the tips broken when I bought the truck, so it would never work. Fortunately I always carry loads of tools. My latest Disco 1 V8 came with nothing but the locking wheel nut socket, no wheel brace, no jack lever, just the jack and the chock. None of the locking wheel nut covers were there! One of the previous owners probably lost patience with them and chucked them. Do I hat the black plastic piece of rubbish? YES! Why? Cos a tool should do the job it is designed to do. Make it out of a strong enough material.

Brian you are such a good guy, thanks for all the info, but I would still keep about two spares of the cover remover, if I could be bothered. Meego, if you have never heard of alloys getting nicked then you are lucky. I live in a relatively crime free area, but we still use a bike lock to wire the spare to its carrier. It is known that thieves will smash the rear window to get at the wheel removing kit, then nick all five wheels. Think about it, it's as much the tyres as the wheels that the thieves are after.

I live in central Scotland and not too far from Glasgow. My wife's family have been in the car industry, buying/selling/body repairs etc for the last 50 years, and none of us can remember the last time a wheel was stolen off a vehicle. For what a thief gets in return, its just not worth the effort.

Oh yeah I've got 2 of those, the original OEM unit came with the vehicle Disco D1 and has completely sheered the grip teeth off, so bought a new one from BRITSH*TE attempted to use once and all the grip teeth sheered off, wot a waste of £6.00:mad:
 
On the subject of the black plastic cover remover tool. Yes, it is just plastic and if not used with care damage can occur. If there was no chance that the tool would fail at sometime then there would be no need for the replacement market.
When the remover is fully seated over the wheelnut cover with all of the "fingers" properly engaged under the cover then it should pull the cover off with no problem. They pull straight off, they aren't unscrewed.
You should only try to remove the cover from the locking wheel nut, the chrome covers on the normal wheel nuts do not come off and no attempt should be made to remove them.
The cover on the locking wheel nut, if the proper ones are fitted is the one with the dimple in the centre.
I change my wheels around every six months and I've never had any trouble with the remover tool.
