Wheel bearings

iv done plenty of bearing swops on cars and not had a problem but with my s3 they just dont seam to be right after, should you use wheel bearing greese on landy`s because after iv greesed them up as im tighning the nut up the wheel is getting stiffer to turn so when iv tightebd it up enough to take the play out the wheel wont turn freely as if its realy over tight any ideas thanks.

I've just replaced the bearings on my front drivers side. Packed with grease, nut tightened to take up the play and it still turn freely!!!!!!

Done o/s n/s rear last wk/end done n/s frnt this wkend noprobs ad 2 warm n/s rear due 2bein dry also put wheel on moved but slightly stiff whoops handbrake :doh:

You have to tighten it up, then back it off a tad, so it (the wheel) runs free, then lock it off with the other nut, and use the clocking washer (a new one if you can) when you have done it, there should be just the littlest of play in the wheel, its hard to get it spot on, the bearings if there a good brand, should last almost a lifetime, people for some reason swap them over when all that was needed was to tighten them up and adjust them, as a general maintenance thing

yea thats how iv been doin it but to get them to spin nice and free theres to much play in it, and i can assure you my hand brake aint bothering it as its about as effective as an upside down unbrella.

If they are spinning nice and free then they are too loose! Depends on your idea of nice and free I guess. Yup, pack the bearings with grease as you are doing. Not sure what the manual says but on the wheel bearings on mine I have always done them up hand tight (with the socket-big-whatever-its-called-tool) and then a quarter of a turn more.

Its also possible you haven't fitted the shoes on right and one side is too high? its very easy to get this wrong, you should finally set them with the snail cams, then back it off a notch or two

Did you fit new eerr races? the things the new bearings sit in, forgot what they are called. You have to knock them out of the hub to fit the new what ever they are called in. I have just fitted new front ones in mine and they where filled with oil? With no seals either, so I had oily brakes that failed the mot. So I put new shoes in aswell. and seals, and grease. also some of my drive mud!

yea i fitted the new shells as id call them one gave way so im replacing them both again when the parts come so ill see how this one go`s but for tightnig i just do them hand tight and put the drum and wheel back on check for play and ajust.
