I changed the front axle on my disco, its a 200 on a 300, but it fits.

There is a rumbling noise, a land rover trained bod at the garage i took it to said "it's definately coming from the drivers side near the diff, check the fluid in the diff"

Now there is no play in the wheel, I checked the fluid. Given my Frontera had a weeping diff plate the fluid wasn't in it long enough.
I checked the fluid, there is plenty of it, but when i examined what was on the finger of my glove, it was almost milky.

I'm guessing it shouldn't be, the axle was sat outside for a while. I'm going to hazard a guess that water has gotten into it.

Opinions?

I'm guessing i should drop it and change it. Is that likely to cure a rumbling bearing? Apparantly the bearings take the oil from the diff

change oil as it has had water in ,not unusual .could be wheel bearing or diff carrier bearing ,wheel bearingsshould run in grease not oil , but oil does run in to hub

thanks, is it a massive or expensive job to replace the bearings if they end up going?

Hi Dave, when you drain the oil out of the diff, let it drain for as long as possible, then refill with EP 90.

With regard to the rumbling noise, this is when you are driving I take it? Have you checked the front wheels for play in the wheel bearings?

Jack up each front wheel in turn and check for play. If there is any, take the front wheel off, take the drive plate off (held in place with 5 bolts and a circlip) then you have access to the wheel bearing.

You may just need to tighten up the bearing retaining nut or they may need replacing. If it's just a matter of adjustment, clean away all the old grease and replace with new bearing grease. Then adjust the bearing nut until the hub still turns easily but there is no play felt.

It's harder to describe than it is to do, to be honest. Cleaning and re-setting the front wheel bearings should be a regular maintenance job ESPECIALLY if you are off-roading alot.

I have never found my wheel bearings to rumble when stationary... How do you cure this?

The way to cure non-rumbling wheel-bearings is to cover yourself with bearing grease (not just any old grease) and then sit on a railway track for a very long time - we can wait.

Yeah yeah alright Mr sarky-pants:D:D:D Cheap shot time I see.

I was just asking for confirmation before launching into what I had hoped might be a useful comment about wheel bearing and their renovation.

lol, i know what you ment.

It was pointed out to me in MOT. rotate the wheel and there is a rumbling noise apparantly coming from the inner edge, might be diff or axle. no play in wheel even when barred.
I've put a 200 axle on a 300 truck, the axle had been sitting aroung for a few months.

I'm going to start the diff drain on sunday morning and let it run out until sundauy evening

Just wondering why you'd swap out a 300 axle for a 200? I thought all 200's came with 10 spline and 300's with 24 spline diff outputs? (I could easily be wrong on this .. )

If you still have the 300 axle and diff, is it any good? I'm after a cheap 300 front (and rear) diff or diff/axle set, to weld the diff centres up for off-roading and Pay 'n Plays .. so gotta be cheap as a cheap thing going cheap .. :)

It's been put on as it was a cheaper option that doing all the work needed to the 300 axle. That will be stripped and refurbed over the summer.
