if the TD5 is so good, why can my 200TDi pull a trailer with a ton of corn in it up a steep hill in high 2nd, but my mate has to go to low box in his TD5 with the same trailer / load behind?
also, why has he had to replace his engine after only 40k (under warranty) while mine's still going strong on 85k?

I have a 200tdi which I have owned for 12 years, it has done 126000 miles and never once failed me. It behaves and sounds like a tractor. It has pulled a 23cwt caravan for most of it's summer life and I am extremely pleased with it. I have now bought myself a series 2 TD5 and to be honest, my particular car knocks the stuffing out of the 200tdi in every respect. Even on paper the engine's spec in terms of power is bigger in BHP and torque. So I don't know what is wrong with your friends TD5, but it's not the norm I can assure you. One of MY friends has had his TD5 re programmed (chipped) and has made a fantastic difference to the pulling power. He went up to Scotland to pick a DEFENDER up on a trailer, he said it handled and pulled like a dream. I have heard that this mod can boost the BHP to 180, without much of a hit on fuel consumption. Trouble is, it costs about £400 to do. Takes about 15minutes. What a rip off. I want to programme my own, with my laptop. (wishful thinking);)

hi there ..what age is your td5 ?? i own a golf tdi myself i i was interested in tuning boxes but the price was soo steep i never really bothered. but i found one on ebay from a company called tdi tuning.co.uk ..i asked lots and lots of questions and the guys were very very helpful. its digital unit and it cost me £70 becuase i have a mark 4 90hp not a pd engine...anyways im sure if you ask them they will be very keen to help and find one that suits u at an affordable price ..im not sayin it will be £70 but it sure as hell wont be £400..i was impressed i just pluged it in and so far the car feels smoother..its adjustable for more power but i never bothered im happy enough and there is no black smoke wat so ever. perhaps its worth a try mate.
TDI-tuning.co.uk - Diesel Performance Products ...just ask them

Hi Chris,
Thanks for that, mine is 2002 td5.
Apparently the TD5 doesn't have to have a chip, all that needs to be done is the computer needs reprograming, a simple task and one that is beneficial. But the only way to program it is with Landrovers Testbook computer or I think Rovacom's computer. And according to my dealer it costs around £400. Which I think is a total rip off for something that should have been done at birth.
But thanks for the info.

hi richard,
i know wat ur sayin ive really into land rovers i have a 300 tdi but my friend had a 2000 td5 and got a power box fitted ..fantastic job ..fully tunable. a remap is good but once uve done the remap ..u cant go back .. at least with the box if ya dont need it take it off and forget about it..its really worth a try fella im tellin ya it made so much difference to the low down torque ..the part the td5 lacks. he also had a power box on the defender he has it made it so much easier on diesel. like if it was £100 or so its worth a try mate.

Hi Chris,
Thanks for your info, If I do it, I'm gonna have the box remapped. I'm not too keen on bolt on boxes. To me, if it's capable of being re-programmed then that's the way to go. All that the boxes do is to fool the ecu that the engine needs more fuel etc. Anyway, not arguing just my opinion. Don't understand why it can't be undone, surely it's just a matter of sending the original codes back, unless of course you mean that I would have to pay again to have it reversed. I think the company I'm thinking of will put it back if your not happy with it free of charge up to a period of time. I will find that out before I have it done. Not going to do it yet, I'm happy with it at the moment. When I start getting bored with it I mght start to play. :D

I am no expert but understand there is one conversion that is a simple re-programming of the ECU, the other involves the reprogramming and a change of intercooler which boosts the power further.
