Disco 4 (LR4) 2010 Disco LR4 with 5.0 and Misfire Codes

We bought a downed LR4 this week that was throwing error codes the owner was tired of chasing. My wife has a Series 3, I have a Disco 2, so we figured a Disco4 would be a good family hauler. I know about the timing chain issues but want to trouble shoot before going ahead with a 16hr task. If anyone has any trouble shooting recommendations before I call it what it is and begin timing chain replacement, please do let me know.

Running OBDwiz report shows:
ECM Calibration ID: CH22-14C204-YAC
The control module voltage (11.76V)
Fuel pressure is 46.41 psi
P0300: Random/Multiple Cylinder Misfire Detected
P0302, P0303, P0304, P0306: Cylinder 2, 3, 4, and 6 Misfire Detected
P0316: Engine Misfire Detected on Startup (First 1000 Revolutions)
P0016, P0019: Crankshaft Position - Camshaft Position Correlation (likely Bank 1 and Bank 2)


OBDwiz has a command line interface option that permits direct interaction with the computers. I ran the following:
Command: 010E (Ignition Timing Advance, Mode $01)
Response: 7E803410E95

7E8: ECU response
34: (possibly truncated).
10E: Echo of PID.
95: Raw hex value (149 in decimal).


Conversion: Timing advance = A - 128, where A = 149. Result: 149 - 128 = 21 degrees (lt should be negative or 0 with engine OFF).

Perhaps my understanding of the response is wrong. I am going to check again tomorrow but if it is actually 21 degrees then the chain is certainly unhealthy. Questions arise though because of findings like the attached picture of a couple partially connected clips and this random just hanging out there... what is it anyway if anyone knows.

Hi

That connector looks like a transport connector that’s isn’t used anymore , I just taped mine up and put it out the way

I wonder as the chain is bad if it’s jumped a cog, voltage looks low but best to double check what they should get ,maybe there’s a bad earth cable causing it to show a lower reading unless the main battery is low , that should be a minimum of 12.6 Vdc with the engine off

also thought at least as u start to take it apart u can time everything up tdc before taking the chain off to see if it had indeed jumped a tooth

The gap iid is a very good fault code reader , don’t know the one ur currently using
