Hi Chaps,

Just wondering if any of you sage like beings would know what exactly is the difference between the EU and Jap versions of the 300tdi Auto?
Now really worried about the trim more about the rest of it?

Cheers!

Different radio ;)
The japs don't put salt on the roads so the discos don't crumble to rust like they do here. When i had my mot last week the guy said he hadn't seen 1 in such good condition for the year!

For example ref spec per country, my 96 "NZ new" 300tdi does not have EGR and has mechanical fuel pump. The jap grey imports to NZ of which there are loads here usually have been clocked and are "loaded" eg every electrical extra and emission control plus EGR and ECM

NZ new aren't rusty no salt here as it's mild weather but jap roads are salted as it's cold there in winter contrary to popular belief in uk but that does not mean you cannot get A jap one that is not rusty.

Just my cents worth

Japan cars have a different set-up of EGR valve but honestly the trim and technical differences are small.

Prices can be hugely inflated for ex-Japan Discos so they are really weak on residuals.

Also, if you ever move from the UK to another EU country, they are notoriously difficult to import into the new country.

hhmm so given that the moment it arrives in the UK or Ireland it's quite likely to catch tin worm at least you are starting from the point where it's in a practically new condition.
Outside of that it's much of a muchness then I suppose.

I did see a nice one recently for 5k 1998 tdi auto XS, cc, A/con etc etc but only 33,000 verified mileage and 1 owner from new! I thought that looked good but then again I could spend that on mine and would look the same albeit with 5 times the mileage!

Anyone think that they're a good buy?

I saw one on fleabay while I was looking for one. Looked nice but I wondered how much it would cost to insure as Jap imports of other 4x4's are more to insure than UK motors.

this is true, over here we have less of an issue.
Many years ago I had a Toyota Hilux Surf (no the head didn't blow, it;s not a gaylander!) and it was 500 per year to insure in the UK but only 250 to insure in the republic. I guess we are a bit more accepting of Jap imports than the UK.

I don't understand this as I've never even been asked if mine is a UK origin or Jap import, when insuring my LR's?????

I too can attest to that.
A rot free one with a pain in the arse to wire radio setup :p

A rot free disco too - did i mention its up for sale ;)

You may have mentioned it in passing :D
I'm looking towards the end of the year and waying up my options.
I love my D1 for the space, would love a Fender but I love comfort and being able to hear myself think at 70mph on the motorway.

Lets see what the end of the year brings!

I don't understand it either but I think they can tell by the reg number whether it's imported or not. At one time I was looking at buying a Shogun or a Pajero. The Pajero's were much more expensive to insure because they were imports.

If you are arranging your vehicle insurance on line then you may find the 'import' question for you to answer, as I have done with compare.com below.

Your vehicle:
1997R Land Rover Discovery V8I Es Auto, 3947CC Petrol, 5DR, Auto

You also have:
•Alarm : Factory Fitted Thatcham Approved Alarm/Immobiliser
•Tracker : YES
•Steering : Right Hand Drive
•Imported : NO
•Seats : 7
