I rekon I will have to change my bulkhead pretty soon. Finding rust in all sorts of places and I haven't even taken off the dash yet!!!

So I'm gonna do it myself. My plan was to find a solid s/h one. Sand it, treat it, paint it, fit it.

But I've read on a few forums not to bother with used ones because they will be rotting on the inside and not last.... Is this true?

I've never seen on off a vehicle so any of your thoughts would be appreciated

Thanks

Ben

you cant tar all with the same brush, you need to treat each individual and see each one. look in every usual place and make your choice on what you see. i got one second hand, it is 100% rust free, all i did was wax it inside and fit it, but i have read about people buying a rust heap. so my advice is inspect each one you see.

buy a galvanised one

that would definately do the job!

Especially to the bank balance! Although they are nice.

My galv bulkhead came from Ashtree Landrovers, but they cost about £800:eek:. But be aware, they are 2nd hand bulkheads that they have repaired and then galved. They will buy your old one off you for £75.

I ordered mine pre-sprayed to the colour I wanted and it looked brilliant. You can galv them yourself but they are prone to warping during the process. Heres some photos of my old one (thats doing a nice job of collecting dust in my garage) so you can see where they rust.

U see this is the dilemma I'm faced with. Half the people who have seen mine have just said repair it, the other half have said 'by the time I've stripped it to repair it u may as well replace it... I can't afford a new one yet, decisions decisions......

if you can weld, repair it and save for a galv, thats what im doing. that bulkhead looks fine to me! get it repaired and sold!

^^^^ Agreed. I decided that if I was going to try and keep a 20+ year old Landy on the road, I was either going to be forever paying someone else to weld it up for me, or I'd have to learn myself. I bought a cheap MIG welder and had a go - my first attempts were hilarious. But then I did an evening course at the local college and learnt loads. I also discovered that cheap MIG welders are notoriously difficult for beginners - so I flogged it on fleabay and bought a better quality second-hand one. The difference was enormous.

How much for? I'd have it!

Was thinking of putting it back on ebay one day. Ashtree Land Rovers have offered me £75, they would obviously repair it, galv it and sell it on. Make me an offer if you wish. Have to be collection from Sheffield though, but I could meet you somewhere near Ladybower reservoir?
