What's "normal" for heater efficiency?

Hi guys. New member here, so this is probably a newb question, so feel free to slap me down...

After over a year of owning a FL2, I decided it was too small and changed over to a used L322 TDV8 Westminster (62 reg) from a main dealer a couple of weeks ago.

Right after getting it, I noticed a few problems that really should have been sorted before handover - remote heater not working (timed/manual does work, so I guess they key isn't mated to the car), driver heated/cooled seat not working (no fan, no nothing), and a bit of interior trim flapping around in one of the footwells.

There's something else I've noticed, but don't know whether it's "normal", hence this question.

When I turn the heater temp up, it's not really warming the interior very fast. Even with the vents fully open and temperature up high, there's just a pretty weak exhalation. I can get air moving if I manually turn the fan speed up.

So, is the heater normally slow, or is this something else to add to the list for the dealer to sort out?

Again, if it's a dumb question, I don't mind being fed slowly to the lions...

Thanks guys.

Diesels do warm up slowly, if it is at fully working temp and still not giving hot air I would ask dealer to investigate. Are you using the auto or manual setting?

Auto settings. I'm pretty sure that my previous FL2 heated better than this. I'm getting warm air out of the vents, but it's more like wafting than being pushed out with the fans.

Also seen that the passenger side of the windscreen demists noticeably quicker than the drivers side, not sure if that's indicative of anything or not

The system won't switch the fans to full speed until the heater core has reached the temperature required to maintain your selected temperature....

This is done for two reasons mainly - one, so it does blast you in the face with cold air while it gets warm and two, increased airflow over the heater core will only slow the warm up of both the heater core and the engine coolant....

The System is quite clever and will always try to gently change the 'climate' in the car gradually to aid comfort and also rapid temperature changes effects the humidity and density of the air in the vehicle and can promote fogging or misting of the windows. The system can change the temperature slowly when used in 'Auto' or if you manually select fan speed and output control it will respond accordingly.

Remember it is an Automatic Climate Control system and not a space heater!

Thanks Saint. That sounds entirely reasonable, and exactly the kind of response I was hoping for. I'll keep this off the gripe list for the dealer. Hopefully they can sort out the rest of the issues pretty quick and I'll go on enjoying this beast.

Thanks again.

PS. Sorry about the crap user name, the name chooser on registration rejects pretty much everything.

Don't strike it off just yet....if you have a legit concern it is your right to ask them about it...see if you can try another TDV8 in the same year and model as yours to see if it repsonds the same.

It could be the Heater Matrix Temperature sensor or the cabin temperature sensor are dicky fooling the system into thinking the heater and/or the cabin temperature are different to what they actually are.

Good point. They'll be taking a look at it on Thursday, I'll update this with whatever they come back with.

Very nice Rangie

You have that right, so much better than the old Freelancer.

I know it's basically just a tarted up end-of-line Vogue, but the Westminster badge on the back just looks nice.

Really looking forward to the summer when I take it up to the Hebrides for a couple of weeks.

Make sure you have AA/RAC recovery:rolleyes:

Well, Hilda got picked up promptly at 9:10 this morning.

Hope they wash her, she's been a dirty girl.

Heater seems a lot better now it's come back from the dealer, blowing fairly nicely when heating the car up. The problem with the heated seats was down to a knackered blower, so it's going to have to go back to the dealer next week for a couple of days for that to be replaced. Remote heater is now working great (key needed mating to the car).

Where's the pics of the newly washed then:rolleyes:
