Disco been parked up for 2 weeks while away on my jollies, parked up outside, took it for a run when we got back and on slowing right down (walking speed) i get a clunking, i thought at first it might be a bit of rust on the discs but its still doing it and it does it when not using the brakes.
Any ideas? this is my first 4x4 so a steep learning curve ahead i think:)

Yes thanks but he was too far away to come and see it but did seem to be interested though,is the clunking all the time or when going over uneven ground or does it sound like something catching as the wheel turns?

Just as i.m slowing down, ie at lights, no jarring its smooth, not anything catching i don't think, its a clunk, might do it 6or7 times before i stop.
Doesn't seem to do it till it warms up a little tho

The pads dont back away from the disks far when the pressure is released ,a pad could be catching some rust on the disk. It might be a caliper partially seized after standing while you were away.

sounds like your handbrake to me, try putting the handbrake on just one click while driving at walking speed and see if it makes it worse, also check if your handbrake drum heats up after a run, it shouldn't it has nothing to do with your footbrakes.
if i'm on the right track possible causes could be.. handbrake cable corroded inside its liner not releasing properly, transfer box output shaft oil seal, although it will only be this if everything inside the brake drum is wet through with EP oil, and if your lucky someone may have over adjusted the shoe's.

handbrake seems fine, the clunking does seem to be easing off the more i drive it, only doing it occaisonally now, i'll see how it is over the weekend.
Thanks for all the advice:):)

me and my big mouth!!! just been out in it and its knocing like hell, only on deceleration/gentle braking, not nuch diff if any if i put the handbrake on a notch or two. i think its coming from front n/s passenger says its central:confused:

I think you're at the point where the jack has to come out. Once it's in the air you'll probably be able to put your finger on it. :)

Mine was like that for a while in France, first thing I said was the rear diff's lost a tooth .. but we soldiered on back to blighty. Wife said nope, it's at the front, bro said it's at the front nearside, sounded to me when I was in the passsenger seat trying to trace it that it was drivers side front ... Long story short, a few weeks later we'd replaced wheel bearings, front discs, all pads, all front bushes, shed-loads of ancillary work .. and it was rear diff crown wheel lost a couple of teeth!

Get the wheels (all of 'em) well off the ground and run it to trace the knock (We went to local independant who lifted it for us for nowt) .. might save a ****load of faffing about.
