What would you swap your rangie for?

Thanks but no thanks :) Looking for something a little more compact and frugal for more city driving.
How about this

The 2010 RR Autobiography that I |"built" on the LandRover website the other day. Only £97354! Cheap as chips....

Not!

I like the look of them but they seem to be even more unreliable than the P38, not to mention difficult to work on. I was told by an LR mech that to work on the engine you have to lift the body shell off the chassis:doh::eek::doh::eek:

I'll stick with my P38:D:D:D

ive heard that as well sounds horendous !!!

'Integrated Body-frame' I think is the fancy term they put on it. I was sure it was effectively a monocoque. Maybe I'm wrong on this but I thought the P38 was the last ladder frame RR and I know the RRS and Disco 3 share underpinnings

Just had a look on RAVE and the L322 section confirms my above post. The lack of a section title 'Chassis and Body' was a give away:p

Its not got a seperate chassis, it still has strong frames which look like chassis rails in the engine bay but they're integrated into the body and can't be removed. I'm sure the Disco 3 is the same.

Bit of a light hearted thread away from the normal 'my whole vehicle is broken, what the hell do I do?' threads!

I was thinking about changing my car the other day, I've got a L322 worth about 13k ish and would be looking for something the same price or cheaper. But after hours of scrolling through autotrader and pistonheads I couldn't think what I would swap it for - I think this is partly not wanting to 'downgrade' to a lesser car.

Though about TVRs, but they are even less reliable than RRs (yes, its is possible!). Thought about 2002-3 BMW M3s. Thought about Old Merc CL500s and S classes. Looked at the old Jag XKs (you can get an early 2000s supercharged one for 10k these days!). Looked at old Audi S4s and S6s. The list is endless.

One think that struck me though was how dated many of these premium cars were looking now whereas I think the L322 interior has aged very well in comparision.

So anyway, this isn't a 'what should I buy' (depends what you want a car for would be the answer!), but what would YOU swap your rangie for if you were going to sell it?

I came from a Tuscan to the L322 and all I can say is don't do it!.
The only car that would really tempt me away is a 2004 or so onwards E55 AMG, think their awesome just a bit more pricey though.

What is this then ? L322 is a totally different car to D3 or RRS.

That link didn't come through, any chance you can pull it out some other way?

I know the D3 and RRS share the more or less same chassis and that they are different to the L322 but I can't find any more hard data on what 'integrated body-frame' means except that the definition of a monocoque is an integrated body and frame. The L322 is certainly a fully integrated full blown monocoque as per RAVE. Did LR go a different route with D3/RRS?

I believe that there is a sort of subframe assembly with the engine and front diff/suspension mounts that is unbolted to allow the body shell to lift off for work on the engine. Only what I have been told, no first hand knowledge so could be wrong.

That makes more sense.

IIRC the original mini was like that and a lot of mid engined cars were too. I believe they drop the engine out for some pretty mundane maintenance things on a lot of mid engined cars so it might not be far off the mark on the D3/RRS.

I'd love to see some underbody shots of a D3. Its the most likely replacement for a P38 for me but I want to get comfort on how tough it is. For all its foibles I can vouch for the toughness of the P38 when used constantly off road.
