Right basically this is the situation.
Got a P38 that looks beautiful in Biarritz Blue (or whatever) 2.5 DHSE/DSE not sure exactly.
Either way what would you do........

My P38 gearbox is knackered so it needs rebuilding and the passenger door locks but doesnt unlock and the alarm sometimes comes on but not sure why.
It has been stood for a while but the engine has been running up to temperature a few times a month over the last 8months.
I have been through a court case regarding the car as it wasnt as expected and basically bought it off a 'dodgy dealer'.... dont ask lol.
Now in the time weve had it we have replaced 2 ride height sensors on the front and an air suspension arm on the front also.
The car has no MOT and a Chequered past as such but the engine is sweet as a nut.

With £3,000 would you -

Find another P38 for your sins or would you fix this one which means spending about a grand for the box to be reconditioned and then possibly another few hundred to tax and MOT it?
Then keep the spare money for repairs etc?

The other question is regarding servicing etc.
Apart from general servicing like oil/filters what else is there?

Any help is greatly appreciated as i really want to keep the current one and spend the money to sort it out and then keep it knowing it is not sorted!

you could buy another or just do the box and bits it needs at least you would know then that the box and other replaced parts will be ok if you buy another you could end up doing the same work to it ,the gearbox was not something landrover can boast about and at some stage if you buy one it will start to say "hello im feeling sick" if the one in question comes at a low price it leaves you with cash to sort it. you can spend a fortune on one and it could break you

My opinion if engine is as good as you say a recon box fitted = £1300 my alarm goes of cant be bothered so iv unplugged it new lock mechanism and your on your way , don't forget diff, gearbox transfer box top up as well and props to grease better the devil you know or start all again with one you don't it a long winded question really ....ps do mot first before shelling out

I would think yes seeing as its the rolling road that checks the brakes but check first or if one gear works enough to turn the wheels you can get a part mot phone and explain the situation

DON'T ALLOW YOUR RANGIE ONTO A ROLLING ROAD!!!
Worlds of pain and expense will follow.

Cheerz for the help. I will look into getting it MOT'd then see what we can do.
I really want to make it work tbh as i loved driving it and so did the missus.

Why? And who has one coz Kwik Fit, AA, Arnold Clark and any where else I can think of as normal MOT places aren't listed.

Is it just a Rangie thing or all Landrovers? VCU?

Please explain - I don't need to worry until next August, but still...

There are three different ways first is to use a decelerometers with this version the car is driven around at about 20 mph and when the car brakes are applied it can tel the tester if the car is pulling to one side and it is down to the testers intelligence to determine the out come .

Second is to remove the fuse and the transfer box will Be in Neutral and a slow rolling road test of front and rear wheels

Third is a four wheel drive rolling road where there are four rollers rolling at the same time not so common as expensive but comming more popular it can also test your suspension by juddering the car up and down to test the suspension

ADD a fuse in position 11.....

The reason you have to do the things above is because of the Centre Diff and VCU if you spin up one axle and not the other -

One: the driven axle will try to drive the undriven axle leading to disaster...
Two: the VCU will destroy itself due to the speed differential between axles (which is what the VCU is designed to try and stop happening)
Three: It'll mash things up!!

Thanks both. I'll make sure I check. When I had a Series III with freewheeling hubs, I didn't have to worry about any of this! :)

If it's an auto box a grand won't look at it. I've just had a rebuild at £2500 ! (97 P38 DSE : ) : needless to say I'm keeping mine and working my way round it's usual hiccups with a view to eventual complete restoration.
