I have an electric fan fitted now, and have decided to fit a thermostat I got from RDX in case I ever forget to switch it on (if ever needed) or if SWMBO drives it and is oblivious

The switch has come with 2 settings - on/off - 87/83 or 92/87

Can't seem to find from searching which one is best for a 1996 300 tdi auto

Any idea's or just trial and error??

Ok, thanks, also it seems it goes on the top hose, but thought it would need to go on the bottom hose from reading other threads?

so I guess the top hose is for the overheating of water that is coming out of the radiator too hot?

No - the top hose is for the hot water coming out of the engine to the radiator for cooling and then returned via the bottom hose to the engine for reheating.

ahh, I see, so if the water is too hot when leaving the engine the fan kicks in to give extra cooling.

But wont this be more 'reactive' to stop an engine overheating as the water is already too hot in the engine - forgive my ignorance, every day is a school day since I started with my disco.....

the idea is to start giving additional cooling BEFORE the water gets "TOO HOT", hence the thermostatic switch. Set that to the temp you wish the engine to run (usually same as Thermostat) or a couple of degrees higher, then the fan cuts in when the normal cooling cant cope.

I get it, cool, will go for the top hose at the higher temp setting and see how I get on with that.

Thank you :tea:
