Evening all,

A few photos and brief description of this job.

Reason: 1. There's a noticeable difference in engine performance when cold and found if cruising at 45mph in rain/cold the coolant temp stayed very low. 2. I do go off roading and through the occasional ford, so needed a means of turning the fan off.

Electric fan from an Astra, simple aluminium brackets onto existing radiator bolts.

Wired into battery live via a relay, switched from the dash. Either off completely, auto or on.

Auto will make use of a temp switch in the top hose when it arrives.

Unfortunately didn't have space in the existing bank of relays so I've mounted it and the fuse to the side of the radiator.




 
I've taken the original fan off and will keep it in the back for emergencies, but will see how it is when driving around town the next few days before fitting the temp switch in the hose.
 
I run an electric fan on the S1. Sit at 30mph no fan needed, raise speed above this fan is on all the time. Now we do this as it heats up quick. On a good run temp sits 85’ & you can see the thermostat open & closing on the gauge.

just make sure your fan is pushing the air through & not bouncing back when stationary .
 
I tried this but followed the instructions on the fan kit. It vibrated through the rubber gasket and punctured all the pipes in the ‘new’ radiator. Glad to see you mounted yours on a bracket ‘off’ the radiator. :oops:
 
Couple of hours out and about today and good improvement.

Placebo or not, the engine seems slightly smoother at idle. I can't imagine even an unbalanced fan could do that though.

Temp needle stuck pretty much bang on halfway on the N, rising to just the top of of N at time before settling again.

I did switch the fan on manually a few times but I think if I was a bit braver it would have settled before rising above the N.

Normal driving between 30 and 40 the temp gauge didn't fluctuate at all, showing thermostat temp reached and cooling system doing it's job.

With the cabin heater on the needle sat at the bottom of the N regardless of speed, but a seriously warm cabin even with only a bikini top... (the Landy, not me.)
 
Temperature switch fitted in the top hose.

36mm generic sensor adaptor with a 1/8NPT temp switch fitted. On at 95°C, off at 85.

Not been out for a drive yet to get up to temp but hopefully isn't set too high.

 
Fan comes on with the temp switch towards the top of the N, but takes a little while to go off. I'll perhaps go up one on the switch temperatures if they keep one in stock.

Eventually goes off but not until well below the N
