For the ones who dont know me gearbox has given up
disco 1 1997 v8 good solid mota 100,000 miles with fsh (what help that was with the g/box lol)

i choose spend the 550.

that's also the limit on a major repair like gearbox/engine that I have for my disco.
Anything over that and I'll rip all the extras off it and scrap it.

only u know what the disco is worth, what uv spent on it and had done in the time uv had it, £550 is not a lot to spend when u look at the cost ,time and effert finding another good disco.

If its not rusty I'd put a second-hand box on it and get me £550 worth of use out of it.
If it is still good keep it, if not sell it. Then buy a Freelander:D

is it worth a grand to you? could you find on as good as this one for a grand? if you can then bin this one and go buy it.. if you can't get the recon box.. a second hand box could be 5 miles away from the same problem that killed you last one so why waste the time or money

or, spend £100 on a runabout to keep you going and get cracking on rebuilding your own box..

No competition, fit another box, secondhand one should be OK, but there's always the possibility of it being a bad one.

If you're used to an auto then a manual conversion won't appeal, but it's possibly easier to sort if it does go pop again.

What's wrong exactly with the old one?

old one is knackered its been pressure tested (no pressure)

If i were you and you could afford £1000 i would go for A recon one because you could spend money and a 2nd hand one for it too happen all over again.

Update
After lots of 'shud i this shud i that' ive just recovered the disco to Driver Transmissions in b'ham, they have so ive been told a good reputation and judging by the motas at their premises ive no reson to believe otherwise... anyways they quoted me £950 all in recon box new torque convertor and may have it done by the weekend, Thanks for all your input guys its helped me make me mind up, im gonna buy a disco to play in and not risk this new box laning
