The book says MTF94 so l put that in when l changed the gearbox oil last week (in my 2005 Defender 110)
However it is now very difficult to get second gear when the engine/gearbox are cold.
It was fine before l changed the oil. I have no idea what was in before.
Is there an alternative to MTF94 in the TD5 gearbox, that makes it easier to get second gear when cold?

what colour was it ,many oils are fine ,its the wear on baulk rings that determines which oil seems better

The gearbox oil looked fine when l dropped it out and there was nothing on the magnetic drain plug.
Mileage is 69,000

We always had the same problem with our 90 TD5 bought new in 2006 but l never tried to do anything about it.

I bought the oil from my local car spares place.
It was Granville branded.
I've just been to my local Land Rover specialist and they gave me what they use which is "MPM" branded 75w/80 GL4 synthetic. On the side it says "Rover Group MTF94"
I'll put this in and see if it's any better.

Castrol syntrans 75w-90 is used in my 2001TD5 110.
The previous owner made detailed documents of what oils he used in the vehicle from new and his notes state that he found this oil to be superior to others he used.
All services were completed by a main dealer so I have continued with this oil in the gearbox. http://msdspds.castrol.com/bpglis/F...9A5C48025782000516BFB/$File/BPXE-8DHD82_0.pdf
As this is the only TD5 I have driven I am unable to make any comparisons with other vehicles but I have no issues at all selecting gears hot or cold weather.
