What is it?

Hi all,

I'm interested in a land rover with no top!! Excuse the dumb newbie question but is this a specific type of vehicle, or can you remove the roof from some types of land rover?

Any info you can give me will be much appreciated

You can unbolt the top of all 'proper' LR's................well, gets more difficult the newer they get cuz someone thought it wuz a good idea to put wires and headlining in and stuff.

I just want something cheap and fun to drive around town and the beach area (live in Brighton), with room for me and some mates (I notice most have some bench seats in the back). I saw one in town with no top and some funky big baloon wheels (I bet the hardcore land rover fans are cringing at this point!!)

Defenders look like good value to the untrained eye, Just based on newer stuff usually needs less work.

If it could drop a 20' boat down a slipway that would be cool, I guess this would be no bother for any landy.

it would be alot of bother for a 2.25 or a 2.5 n/a!

hahaha....... no you've lost me. Are you saying a defender roof removal is not possible? So I need a s3 OR s2?

No he's saying towing a 20' boat would be a lot of bother for a S2

converting a defender hartop into a pickup is quiet easy

I see.

That's a pickup. ya numpty. if ya want to do this to a defender ya need to fit series doors as the defender doors don't have removable tops

generally id say the older it is the easier it is to de-roof it ,takes me about 10 minutes to remove the truckcab off mine ,mind you not all the blts are always in place

OK cool. I'm learning and I've only been called a numpty once

That is exactly the type of thing I want, but looks like one that tidy is a lot of money!! I'll be after a dog I guess

I assume the lwb versions are the same story RE roof removal

what's ur budget and have a look on fleabay to see whats on offer.

I guess around 1.5 to 2K. I've noticed some of the longer vehicles have back passenger doors (and all have back door) So I guess you'd need series doors for that too?

paid 1600 for mine ,without truck cab ,but it does have a galvanised chassis ,and coils ,with transit 2.5 diesel power ,bout 35 round town ,

Well, i'd be happy with that for 1600. Sounds like my idea is not completly impossible so I'm happy.

I wonder how legal it is to have people sat on those bench seats with no roof etc!

would depend on the age of the vehikkle i think ,older series landys were designed that way ,ie no seatbelts in the rear etc ,and the roof is just there to keep you dry ,might be differant tho if you were to stuff a couple of orange boxes/bean bags in the back of a defender

Twas excellent fun, had some fantastic summers up and down the south coast with the roof off... ahhh the misty eyes...

AND the thing taught me a helluva lot about mechanics.... heh!

Learning helluva lot about mechanics tells its own story - sounds like a nightmare to me
