What have you done to your Freelander today

After four years of ownership, the recent MOT test went straight through for the first time since I've had the td4. As a result of not having to fork out several hundred pounds to keep on motoring I decided to celebrate by treating myself with a purchase that I'd been wanting for a while.

Becker AUX in cable, £1.99 from ebay including postage, by air mail from Hong Kong (how is it possible to make AND send it so cheap), and I'm at last able to enjoy my music collection on board in decent quality without cds all over the shop... Very pleased.

Well after much thinking I have retrimmed my door cards. Pickerd charcoal grey fabric. It's not perfect but it is looking more modern than what it was before. Funny multicolored zig zags.
Also fitted front spots. Connected through relay to high beam.
Just watching wheeler dealers with wee panda 4x4. And got me thinking about snorkel. And engine sump guard as I do not have one at all.
Lastly anaged to find where the leak at the back is. Took boot carpet off couple of days ago and left it bare. After much rain and "storm" found out that water coming through tailgate. There was a trail of water on top of plastic trim where tailgate meets main body sill. Still looking for ways to waterproof it. Sealed plastic membrane inside tailgate. Hope this cure it.

Replaced ird pinion seal due to a leak. I think that the problem might have been, that the pinion nut had come loose, but changed the seal and tighten the nut while I was at it. Also replaced both front drive shafts.

The car jused to have a vibration at around 100 km/h - now it runs smooth......
 
Had a wild panic yesterday, only just recovered, so its, "what did you do to your Freelander yesterday"
Breathed a huge sigh of relief, the chimney top blew off and just missed my Freelander.
Fortunately it hit the wife's Jeep!!
See, if you thought Anglo-American relations had died with the election of Donald trump, you were wrong. I mean, how brave of the Jeep to jump in the path of a falling chimney and save my Freelander:)

Oh and if your wondering, the Jeep really is built like a tank, it bounced off, I just need to polish a few scratches out.

Bet you were all really worried about the Jeep:p

I hope you didn't tighten the nut to much. Over do it and the collapsible spacer between the bearings will compress the bearings, causing failure. The correct way is to remove the output pinion and tighten the nut while measuring the bearing pre-load.
 
After another couple of weeks of tour bus duties covering over 2,500kms mainly with 5 adults on board - the rigors have finally broken the Freelander!

Discovered that the coolant expansion tank has gone from this in November.

I've had to top it up every week since November.
However the oil in the coolant is my main concern.
I think the oil filter housing to block oil seal has failed. I've ordered a replacement, which I'm hoping will cure the problem.
After many attempts to find the leak. I've noticed the block is wet below the filter housing. So I'm betting that's where the problem is. The previous owner had the same problem and was told to change the cooler. The cooler is new, but oil transfer and coolant loss remains.
So I have just a coolant leak, and the oil is residue from the previous failed cooler. Or the cooler was fine and the seal to the block was the original problem.
I'll see once I've done the seal change.
Bloody Germany rubbish. Give me a British engine any day.

Problems that hide themselves well are a right pain. I've got a coolant loss issue as well. Randomly the coolant bottle is being emptied. It can go for ages and not lose a drop, then all of a sudden its empty. Fill it up and its gone again within a couple of days - then may last another couple of days or 3 months!

I strongly suspect the heater matrix - I do have moisture in the passenger footwell and condensation in the car - but I'm not fully convinced its not water coming in through a poorly sealed replacement windscreen or water making its way down from a leak around the back window. I'm not to inspired to rip out the dash unless I'm sure it will solve the problem.

Mine is similarly random as to when the coolant disappears. I can drive for miles and not loose a drop. Then drive for a couple of short trips and loose 1/2 a litre. It's very frustrating to say the least. It doesn't seem to drip any coolant. But I did spot a damp patch below the filter housing, when the engine was cool. It appears to evaporate off when the engine is hot. I can't think of another location where the oil and water are in close proximity. Well, except for the HG, but the M47 isn't known to do HGs very often. So that stupid little rubber gasket is my first port of call.
 
Today I have fitted a Vectra sliding armrest on top of standart one. Needs tidying up but perfect fit. Standart armrest is to low for me and was useless for resting arm. So cut a bit of old one and fitted vectra one on top. Looks oem. For me anyways haha

Also planning to fit either MGF rear view mirror(already purchased for a whopping £15 including armrest from my local scrappies) or find suitable autodimming mirror. There is only two wires going to it. Might even find volvo one with compass. But they usually coded to a specific chassis number.
