I thought it was the process in which it separates the air & oil, returning the oil back into the engine whilst allowing the crank case to breathe?

Yes it is but its unlikely to be needed in a healthy engine because there is very little flow to make a cyclone, what worries me is dust returning through the open cyclone cage into the engine, I must admit I don't know if the seperator is upstream or downstream of the positive backpressure valve.
On a very dry dusty trip to the Pyrenees a couple of years ago I checked the foam seperator before we left home then again half way through the trip & at the end of the trip, on those occasions it was almost completely blocked with a mixture of dust & oil so some dust does get back as far as this seperator somehow....or do I have a problem with my PCV valve ?

Its an identical M47 engine to the BMW applications, just with a different tune and I think different injectors too, so don't see why they would change it and make it standard on BMW cars if it didn't work better? Admittedly the engines don't go to as many of the same places, but dust is dust and you can get it anywhere

- Fit new IRD
- Fit new clutch shaft, bushes, yokes ect.
- Refit clutch plate, cover, flywheel
- Refit gearbox,
- Fit new gear change rod (previous workshop broke it)
- Fit new gear change mechanism bush
- Fit new rear diff bushes (previous workshop broke it)
- Repair exhaust mounts in front (previous workshop broke it)
- Renew/Repair front flexible exhaust down pipe (Probably previous workshop broke it)
- Fixing rear brakes, new brake cylinders probably

Still counting :D:D , but now it's able to drive again.

Yeah Simon, just wondering why Land Rover would go to the trouble & expense of changing it or was it originally the foam version in the BMW application ?

I hope you are using a different workshop? How on earth can they break a gear selector rod or exhaust? Unless they let the gearbox and engine hang on them!!
At least you are sorted.

Yes it is in a different workshop since 3 weeks ;)

Gear selector rod was damaged when they trying to put gears by force when they fill PG1 with ~4-5 liters of thick oil. This little cardan joint on end have massive backslash and not transmit gear selection properly.

Exhaust mounts and flexible area was damaged when they remove/fit IRD/gearbox. Probably hit or moving aside by force or something.

It's still not ready, now my new garage remove all faults and damages that they found. But those are only small things like broken fixings, cable ties, rusted clamps ect.

Was originally the foam version, BMW ended up replacing thousands of them because they were causing engine faults so developed a new way of removing oil from the air. (They weren't originally checked as part of the service, were meant to be fit and forget parts, which led to the problems)

I haven't heard of any problems arising from fitting the cyclone type replacement, if anything mine drives better with it fitted, feels a little smoother.

hi
ive just ordered a modified crankcase breather/oil separater of ebay from LR trade parts its for the m47 bmw engine which is in my td4

Today I have been mostly removing my prop shafts and VCU...Now running Mondo mode :D . Can't say its any quieter or smoother, except on full lock as would be expected...

While I was down there I replaced the IRD fluid and the Rear diff fluid, It was black and stank after 18k miles?......Quite a bit of swaft on the drain plugs again.......

New VCU I think:mad::(:D

My experience of driving in 2wd is that the traction control works overtime and the handling is best described as frisky :D

My rear diff oil stank when I removed the drain plug & had a consistency like putty than oil!
It was at that point I decided to remove the cover & clean it all out instead of just siphoning out the oil & replacing it.

IRD oil is still to be done!

Well, still don't know what happen with them, we done many good things through this 5 years. But i won't think about this any longer. Lawyers and Judge will think about it.

Now i would like to be happy :D . Seeing a empty space on parking since 4 weeks was terrible. Now a month and 2500 quids later (total rise a little) i get it back in end of week.
Also we've got some surprise - going back on road with style

This was my concern too as im not the main driver of this vehicle, but took it for a thrash and these were my exoeriences

1. No extra transmission noises.
2. Handlings not much different, in fact feels better around corners.
3. No scrabbling of wheels but it is an auto box, so wheel spins are out of the question:( , and I have 3 amigos at present so cant comment on the tc, will have to test it in the wet.

Yep it was like grease on the drain plugs, but then it is a thick oil grade...no idea what the inside looks like, guess thats another job to put on the list. I only changed the oil as with the prop removed the access was easier, and I had spare diff oil knocking around from last time. Using it as a flushing oil. Will replace it again before I fit the new vcu:D

When my IRD went, the oil that came out was a very metalic light-grey - due to all the bearings being ground to dust. Being black may indicate that the oil is old or the wrong type (I don't know) but I don't think its an indicator that the IRD has been wearing too much.

In road use, I've found that my L Series performs almost exactly the same in 2WD as 4WD. Wheel spin basically non-existant and no electronic kick in from TC.

Its only when I take it places that a 2WD car shouldn't go that the TC lights up!

Got the dreaded loss of power and intermittent engine management light so changed inline filter, crank case filter and fitted EGR mod. 142,000 miles and all seems well (touch wood!)
