Went poking about under the van with a screw driver last week.
Never a good idea :(

Time so like this I wish I knew how to weld.
Or had the time away from work to learn how to weld!

Got to see all the lights on the dashboard come on one after another, in the following order, whilst driving from Canterbury to Deal.... battery charge light > Rear Air Suspension Light (both) > Three Amigos > SRS Airbag > S+M. Then they all went off at once, which was a relief, until I realised the temp gauge, fuel gauge, tachometer and speedo had all gone off too..... but that was OK as a moment later the engine stopped. And then nothing worked, except my AA App on the iPhone. Top AA Man out, and confirmed my fear that the alternator had fried itself. The tests showed a 95amp leak to earth from what remained of the cooked battery via the alternator.

Fair play though, he disconnected the alternator and made cables safe, and dropped in a new charged battery so we could drive to a garage and pick up a loan car as I had to get stuff done today. So looks like I'm in the hole for a new alternator....... but on the upside, doesn't appear to have zapped anything else in the process!

This week, I have started on a long list of jobs that has been building up for several months. The back strip down was finished today and the chassis steam cleaned; there's surface corrosion but nothing worse.

From the back:
  • Remove boot floor to replace fuel pump and feed and return pipes as necessary - I have been getting a 'fuel pressure' fault on my Hawkeye despite the running pressure being on spec.
  • Replace rear brake pipes and flexible hose.
  • Remove and recover headlining
  • Possibly replace all road springs with new standard OE spec ones. Mine feel very hard after twenty two years; shockers have been replaced.
Then, at the front:
  • remove engine (163K) and replace with low mileage (30K) factory rebuilt unit
  • replace both complete front inner wing assemblies whist the engine is out
Obviously anything else that is found will be dealt with.
I would like to sort out the radio/CD player. Somebody has replaced the original unit with a Clarion CD/radio and only connected the two front door speakers. It looks like the plugs have been chopped around so could be fun. I need to find replacements for the two (sub-woofers?) speakers in the back door as these are falling apart. is it possible to buy straight replacements?

@Silverbeard50
I can't help with the rest of your list, but I can tell you that in the original set up of the radio system, all four door speakers were driven straight from the radio head unit and the two sub-woofers in the tailgate were driven by their own separate amplifier also built into the unit housing the two speakers.
It's unlikely that you'll find a way to get the dashboard controls to work without some serious work and preferably a replacement head unit.
If you do go for a more up-to-date radio unit, you'll find some with front and rear speaker outputs quite easily these days.
Replacement amplifier/speaker units for the rear door do sometimes turn up on ebay.
Wiring drawings for the radio, including wire colour coding can be found in RAVE:-

Thanks Brian. I have Rave on my laptop already thanks. The wiring seemed to be a mess last time I had the radio unit out but I hope to sort it out. I suspect that the Clarion unit currently fitted has the outputs that I need. Plenty of time to play with it whilst it's off the road for the rest of the work.

Taxed it, which I think it does not deserve after it messed me around last week on the motorway.................:(:(

But then again, after the new filter housing it is now behaving itself, so maybe I will let it off.

Cheers
