Hi, i have just recieved my spotlights of rebel4x4 with all the wiring kit etc.. however there are no inline fuses or fuses built into the relay and realised i have no fuses (or can't see any) on my radio or cigar 4 way adaptor....

So for the following, what size fuses do i need???

a) 2 x Wipac spotlights, 100watt each
b) 2 x 55 watt rear work lights
c) Car CD/Radio (just a basic one, nothing fancy)
d) 4x Cigar Adaptor (so you can plug up to 4 things in at once)

Many thanks,

Alan:):confused::)

a) 2 x Wipac spotlights, 100watt each = 17Amps - so a 20Amp fuse.
b) 2 x 55 watt rear work lights = 9.2Amps - so a 10Amp fuse.
c) Car CD/Radio (just a basic one, nothing fancy) - 3Amp fuse.
d) 4x Cigar Adaptor (so you can plug up to 4 things in at once) each can take 10 Amps - eek! - use a 20Amp fuse.

brief formula for you
P=IV

Power = CurrentxVoltage
Therefore,

Power/Voltage = Current.

So, if you have 200watts of 12V spots...
200/12 = 16.666666... amps. Use a 20 amp fuse.
The same can be calculated for the rear work lights.

The radio, look on the back, there should be a fuse on it. Use the same as that. If not, then start with a wee 5 one. If it blows, try a 7.5. If that blows, try a 10. I can't picture it being more than 10 though, as 200watt sony ones ues a 10.

Cigar adapter... what are you going to plug into it? 4 wee satnav type things? Or a satnav, a big work light, a small air pump...

Hi thanks everyone for the fast replys!! The cigar adaptor is only gonna have satnav, phone charger, thats about it. There is no fuse on the back of the radio.. Also, are spotlights and worklights supposed to have illuminated switches on them? As rebel4x4 supplied non-illiminating switches...

Cheers,

Al

Aye!

That said, the legal maximum wattage for a reverse bulb is 21 watts, and i think you are only allowed 2 at most.

If you are claiming they are working lights, you need an amber beacon.

Find me a copper that knows that though... :) (Other than my dad)

Hi, the two work lights are off their own switch - will be used when loading trailer at night or reversing when green laning. Are the two 100watt spots legal? Again, i will get them wired so they will only be run off a seperate switch and will only work when hi-beam is on as well (is this right?) - Should i keep a cover on them when not in use??

Cheers..

Forgot to say also, i bought 5 meters of Thinwall 32/0.20mm, 1mm2 off of ebay for the rear work lights with some convoluted tubing, will this be ok for the front spots or will i need a higher rating cable..

Many thanks!

Al

1mm is 16.5 amps, so in theory it would be OK, however you are going to use a 20 amp fuse so the wire would not be properly protected.

When you are running your engine your alt will deliver about 14v so the amperage will drop to 7.14 amps so it really would be OK under normal circumstances albeit close to the mark, but it's a landrover so things are not normal.

You are better to over engineer these things, i.e. when I wire things up in my house I use 4mm cable for a standard 32amp ring where 2.5mm is the norm.

Order up some more: VWP - thinwall cable

Use two lengths of wire - - that splits the load across both wires - i.e 100/12 on each wire - so no problem. You can then if you wish, fuse each wire at 10Amps.
