What do you get on a full tank ??

You are one of the lucky ones then on the inbetween

some get less than 350

Right followed this for a while and monitored my fuel usage.
through 3 tanks i got 1st tank 495 miles pottering shops low amount of motorway stuff.
2nd tank. 545 a good run up to St Andrews from London steady 70 roof bars off!!
3rd tank 520 to and from new job at Heathrow 66 mile a day mostly motorway. Roof bars back on cross bars.
normal fuel, Egr plate on , fuel additive added each tank, oil add added last change, other than that standard 300 Tdi Auto 95 with 120k running on new tyres Michelins and she's never Cained
So an average of about 510 miles sounds about right.
I did recently tow my caravan 992 miles and did exactly 2 and a half tanks

I,m gonna dip my toe into this one !!.

2002 TD5 "BOG STANDARD", on 255/65/16 Genaral Grabber UHP,s.

Its a family vehicle that does 2 to 10 mile trips, with regular wading in low range and I get it " proper dirty " once a week.

It doesnt get " booted " every where and doesnt go much above 65mph.

Tesco fuel gets 490 ish,
Shell fuel gets 520 ish.

This makes the mpg 27 ish to 29ish. ( according to the vehicles milage reading )

I personally think this is fantastic for such a vehicle.

I cant even imagine getting 600+ !!!.

That could be the problem, Rev. If you keep it below 60 even 5mph makes a huge difference. Last week I did a leisurely (60mph) trip to France and got 400 miles on an indicated half tank on the way out. Coming back from Portsmouth I was in a hurry, so did the last bit at 80, except for the road works, and sure enough the tank is almost half empty at approaching 200 miles. Only 33% faster, but used twice as much diesel. It's all that air hitting the windscreen (TD5 auto by the way, and all on French diesel).

Hi, Doing a little test myself on this very subject, ran a 200tdi 90 and thought it was the dogs balls as far as fuel consumption was concerned, compared to the old 2.5 na i took out, anyway now running 200 tdi disco and it looks like im on fresh air compared to 200 tdi 90, the difference is bloody great to say the least, i know its not shaped like a chipped brick which has got to help big style.
Filled up to brim week last wednesday £84 fer fechs sake, trip clock back to zero and not over revvin ie, upto about 2400 revs, settin off in second gear on flat and its already looking good!!! Done 196 miles and needle is half way between 3/4 and full mark on guage, i,v done well over 400 miles in past so will let yer know when i refill what the milleage is, could be a couple of weeks as i only do 30 miles a day, all gear on motor is standard at mo, will speak soon.

new jeremy fearn intercooler, uprated pupm,stage 2 turbo, egr removed,de-catted performance exhaust system,(168bhp) 2" lift suspension with procomp es9000 and special springs,es2000 steering damper,tyres(275/75/16) all terrains and albe works ali roof rack, and worked out to 20mpg i am now trying to keep below 60mph and driving more economically to try again. are any of the above seriously affecting my mileage. just filled up £86 ETR

Hi Eric, on the face of it you have a nicely kitted Disco there, but the bigger tyres will have detrimental effects in relation to mpg:

1. Bigger wider tyres (the more all-terrain, the worse the effect) create more drag on the road - think of racing cycles and their tyres;

2. You will NOT be getting an accurate reading from your mileometer, it will be 11.4% low. So you are actually doing more miles than it is showing !!
See: Tire size calculator Std. tyres 235/70/16 then your tyres 275/75/16

Roof racks are notorious for increasing fuel consumption due to increase in aerodynamic drag. Ditto with the 2" lift.

Wip the roof rack off and you should FEEL a difference in the aero-drag. If you can get hold of another set of wheels with std, tyres to see the effect they have.

i can understand the roofrack and the allterains which i really need as i got this beast to use on our north east beach at horden in county durham to do a bit fishing ,but the 2 " lift confuses me as its still the same size lump of metal does the wind then not go underneath easier ?? tried to send a piccy of it on the beach but could'nt figure it out

First of all let me say that I'm NOT a professor of Aerodynamics, ok? but I think I've read somewhere that you can't manage the flow under the vehicle unless you get into F1 style designing. So what you end up with is effectively a bigger brick !!

Look at all the saloon cars in a carpark, they are low, much lower than cars used to be, with steeply raking windscreens. They do this to reduce drag.

Here is a Series comment. Filled up today. Cost £25 for 45 litres in Gibraltar. It does around 800kms at 80-90kmph.

I think that equates to 500 miles at 50/55 mph for peeps who don't do kms.

Oh, I think we have a bit of drag.

This is right, i remember the "piece of paper" trick from physics lessons where you fold a piece of paper twice about 2" from parallel edges, put in on a table so you get a "tube", then when you blow down the tube it sucks the "roof" down - a bigger gap underneath "sucks" the car onto the ground far more which causes far greater frictions, as well as increasing height (which effectively increases size of the whole thing trying to be pushed along)

If it is within the wit of man to design an engine, it is within the wit of man...............to get really frustrated when it overheats and hit it with a very big hammer..................sorry about that, sometimes Disco designs just annoy a little, all better now.

You will get to the bottom of the overheating problem Eric, and when you do and its fixed, it will feel so GOOOORD

Is it a std vehicle/std tyres? If yes then there is something wrong. I got 400 mls out of 3/4 of a tank on the last refill, regularly get over 500 and at a pinch, with the yellow light having been on for a while nearer 600 - I was gettting nervous but when I filled up I could only get about 70 ltrs in, I think.

I know they are an 89 ltr tank but I don't suppose you can actually get that much in - what does everyone else think?

You can usually get in more than the quoted figure, because that doesn't include the filler pipe.

Both my 300 Tdi's managed about 540 miles before the light came on, and my record was 604 with lots of steady long distance runs. I saw it go below the 500 mile mark when wearing my heavy boots.
My last Td5 usually got about 460 but that had a tuning box fitted so I'm hoping the latest one will manage more than that..........
