I bought a cheap arse Clarke gasless job a couple of years ago to do a couple of bits on the Alfa. Paid for itself the first week I owned it. My welding is still ugly, though.I got my mig welder 30 years ago and its payed for itself many times over

Mines a old clarke gas one, i was quoted £300 for some welding on my Cortina so payed £120 for a welder so quids in first time i am not the best by any means but get by.

Got a new set of idlers and drop links to fit today..
Got the tensioner off and pulley removed...
And it starts to **** down with rain!!!

You are thinking of volume 4, fun things to do in a Range Rover, take it off road and you are going to get bummed so might as well save fuel and the recovery cost and do it on your drive ..

Sun came out for 5 minutes while I fitted the new pump and refitted the tank. Just got the wheelarch liner to fit tomorrow.don't know why people butcher their boot floor to replace the pump.
Ah yes, I like that one, too!Lol, you said budget.....

Never used a mig welder. Borrowed an arc-welder several times and been tempted to buy one a few times.
Would you say the mig welder is gentler on the metal or no real difference?

mig will weld thin car panels a stick welder wont your governed by rod size, if your using a 2mm rod the work would want to be thicker

Mig is much better at thin bodywork than ark as the gas helps cool the metal, but for heavy stuff i believe ark wins but i an no way an expert at welding, i did gas at collage on steel and brazing copper and just jumped in feet first with the mig.

I have done panels under a car with arc using thin rods, not easy or pretty but doable.

Guess the mig takes up more space too. Still, ages since I needed to weld anything. Might keep an eye out on the Bay for a bargain.
Of course, having an old Ford you'd be an expert on welding.

Even I can mig, not pretty but useable. Was supposed to use argon but was told that only cleans it up so ran without mostly. Good grinder and few flap discs to go with it.
