Hi all, i'm up to make a quite long journey with my Disco(about 5000km) which will include some light off road too. I have a compartment in the boot(beside the laterals with standard equipments) dedicated for tools and vital replacement parts and i'm permanently equipped with:
- 2 bottle-jacks, a high lift extreme 48" jack and 2 x 2t axle stands.
- all kind of usefull tools/spanners(including a big hammer;)), compressor, 12 to 220v/ac converter, soldering gun.
- various hoses, duck tapes, glues, wires, connectors, WD40
- backlog of each oil/fluid i've used
- new parts: fuel pump, CKT, ECT, FT sensors, clutch master/slave cylinder, clutch switch, 2 x ride height sensor, relays, fuses, bulbs.
- Hawkeye

What other bits would u guys recommend to have in the boot/glovebox(i mean just in case)...i refer to small but important, not very hard to replace bits which used to fail and cant just bypass/unplug them to go further.

I might look a bit :crazy: but i dont want to pay loads of money to be towed or waste hours and nervs for some simple failure......believe me, all these are cheaper than being towed 100km then paying a garage to diagnose and replace a CKT sensor which they might not have on stock(...i.e).

Hi Fery, I've just read and re-read your post and there's very little I can think of to add. The only things electronic-wise that will stop a TD5 engine are the crank sensor and intank fuel pump and you have taken care of them.

I was trying to remember the thought process for my Moroccan trip and one of the biggest worries when off-road was punctures, so do you have in your plan 2 or 3 cans of tyre repair jollop?

Whre are you going - anywhere interesting?

Cheers Dave......of course i have a tubeless tyre repair kit on me all the time(i forgot to mention it coz it was too obvious for me;))......i didnt think about U/j's though........which u/j do u think would let me down and i could repair on the ground ?

By the way ......i want to catch a big fish in one of the scandinavian rivers without a preordained destination......i will just hit the road on my landy:)

Hiya mate, Heading off - sounds like a great idea :D:D

In terms of U/j's I was thinking of the propshaft ones and they are do-able at the side of the road. You will need a 'G' cramp of suitable size so that you can press out the cups, some spring clip compression pliers, grease gun and plenty of grease.

This is TD5 right?

Donut, no that's not a term of endearment but another part. Only thought of it as mine needs replacing soon.

It's the rubber coupling between the rear drive shaft and the back axle.

Also, a box of seals etc would be useful. The important ones like axle seals etc. Not likely to fail I know but they won't take up much room either.

I remember when I went to Ireland in my old Fiat Regata. We were only going on holiday. Didn't stop me putting spare alternator, starter and hoses in the boot. I had another regata that I was stripping for spares, so I had all these bits.

Did you mention alternator and starter etc?

Fuses - lots of them

Hawkeye if you have one
 
wheel bearing, rescue/amalgamation tape, spare radiator bleed screw or equivelent screw/bolt, thermostat, water pump, instant gasket, liquid metal/chemical metal, carb cleaner,prop u'J's, grease gun and grease, 1x left and 1x right trackrod end, spare filters, bolts with the same thread as that in the bottom of your fuel filter in case the drain bung/sensor breaks, drop arm ball joint, G clamp, mole grips, brake fluid, cable ties, jubilee clips, innertube and tyre levers, puncture repair kit, a couple of short planks (to stop yer jack/axle stands sinking) electrical cable, assorted nuts, bolts and screws.......

I'll add more as I think of it.
 
Sorry if this is obvious.

Cable ties, bungees, couple of LED head torches and a sealant gun with a tube of PU 40 in it.

TD5 wise, it looks like you,ve got it mostly covered. ( theres an injector on ebay for £ 25 at the mo ?? ).

Sounds great though, big old trip ahead !.

Cheers mate, i'll add these..., i wish the wheel bearings were good for me(it's D2;))....but i have quite new wheel hubs and a box with all sorts of bolts/nuts/screws/etc.

This is a good point........though i've recently fixed the starter solenoid with the denso kit....for the alternator i'll just pray , i have a kind crisis backup for that one: a small petrol 12v battery charger...........the other ones are covered. Thanks mate
 
If your going alone, a baseball bat down beside the seat...in pikey country never leave home without it. Wooden one not a fairy alloy one.Make sure you also have a ball. ****es the cops off if they think you have it for an "unlawful" pupose and you invite them to play catch with you at the roadside ( no offence you have shown lawful purpose). A case of Whisky. It costs a mint up there they crave it, better than cash. Not exactly mechanical advice, but you can have all the spares in the world but there no use to you when your standing on a deserted road in your underpants because some nomad bastards have jacked your Landy.
