Ah, handles for farmers to help then get their trailers/farm machinery manhandled onto the tow hitch. Seems quite logical now. Thanks for the replies.

WW2 Jeep's had them fitted near the seats so you could grab on when going over the rough and not get ejected.Series ones are steel, later ones ali.
