Eyup, just wondering if anyone has any experience or knowledge on replacing/converting the old lift up style door handles on early defenders with series style ones (with lock).

Im looking to replace all mine on my '83 110 with series style handles (with locks).

Was under the impression that i could simply remove the old handle and mechanisms from the door and replace with an all contained series style handle (and latch)...

Fellow on phone at paddocks however told me its not possible as they simply dont fit. He couldnt seem to specify why, just that mine were obsolete and whenever anyone has tried in the past theyve always returned the purchased handles. So only option would be to replace the entire door or find original part to replace.

Seems abit odd to me. Feel like im missing something, as the doors on mine are the same as a series 3 (sliding window), technically wouldnt a series 3 door handle be able to be fitted without much adaption?

Attached some pics of my current locking and handle system

Any help would be much appreciated!

Cheers

Don't fit series 3 latches, fit the anti burst type lift up handle latches used on military doors/later series. You'll obviously need to buy strikers too but they'll fit fine.

Cheers mate! Yes i was going to get the antiburst type.

Still not sure why there'd be an issue with fitting the handle in place of the current one. I'll think i'll just buy on and see how i get on fitting it...

All best

I think the issue is with the door card lock Button and internal opening catch. The military ones a like the series style where the inside is a “mirror” or the outside with a curved handle from the lock to open and a small sliding catch to lock rear to a rear door.
Because of this they may fit and work as a catch but they will not Interact with the existing internal furniture. And the military door cards are designed for sliding windows rather than up and down ones.

ah i see. well im wanting to be rid of the door cards anyway and hopefully all of that mechanism for the interior locking and latch. so hopefully that's the only issue.

thanks for your response

if yoi are getting rid of all of that then your only issue will be the window mechanism and if that gets in the way of the lock or how to cover it if you have no door card. Or be done with it and for the series style military doors. That’s what I have on my 110! Sliding windows are much better.

the window locks on mine are contained in the center, just below the window. they use that wheel type lock and mechanism that is screwed into the actual door frame (similar to military ones), so they're completely out of the way. not around to take a pic of mine, but this guy's (photo attached) has the same door type. (arrows pointing to window lock and door handle interior latch.

In which case you already have the series type military doors I am referring to and have fitted to mine. In which case I believe the antiburst locks along with the correct striker will fit if you remove the door card. Also I believe the military door cards (what I have passenger side only on mine) are also a direct for.

Mud UK do good door cards for series and military doors. I've got them on both fronts and the rear and they look smart. Had them for years and they're still solid

Do you have a link, I have the early 110 split doors on my station wagon front and back. I have military door cards on the front but cannot find any door cards for the rear.
