I have a defender 90. The hub retaining nuts on the front axle keep working loose (even though they have the locking washers on) and as a result i get wobbly wheels and have to tighten the nuts up again. when its at its worse it makes the breaks crap as when the wheel vibrates it pushes the pads apart and so you get a 'long pedal' on first application as a result i drive around pumping the brakes all the time. Anyway the bearing is beginning to whine abit so i am going to change it, but i am reluctant until i know how to ensure its not gonna work its way loose again. Has anyone had a similar problem / offer any advice.

First off if yer bearing is fooked it will cause exces play. Second off have you tried fitting a new lock washer and bending it over BOTH nuts?

ta ratty! i'll try that. i've only ever bent the washer over the outer nut (cos that's what i was told to do by someone). Is there a torque setting for the nuts? i only ever tighten the first nut up using common sense. i.e too tight and the wheel won't go round. Then locking washer and then dog the locking nut up on to that then fold the locking washer onto the lock nut.

Someone is an idiot. you need to bend the washer down over the first nut. Then up over the 2nd nut once you've got it tightened up.

looks like you've found the reason for your loose nuts then. The tab has to be bent over both washers as described by redhand.

I've never bothered using a torrque setting on my hub nuts (I use a box spanner). I adjust em up just enough to take the play out without causing any binding.
