Hi All
Thought I say hi as I have just become a landy owner again. The wife and kids say I should see a doctor and get help but hey. The rain yesterday made it worse as I took the kids to school. "I didn't know landys had showers in them" said my daughter as water pi**ed through the roof everywhere. I knew I shouldn't have bought one with a sun roof. In the back water came in and stayed! I can only assume that it must have come in from the wheels through the wheel arches. I'll have a look later today.
The vehicle in question is a 88 defender 90. Someone has either nicked the turbo or put a turbo sticker on the back, I'm sure someone on here can tell me which is right:) butI think the turbo is missing as it ssoooooo slow.
My other problem (as if there's only two:)) is the bottom of the doors. Are there pannels I can buy to replace the rot ones and where?

Looking forward to doing this one up a bit and making a few trips in it. Hoping to drive down to the Sahara in 2010 but think I might have to buy a newer one:(

Well it won't be a Defender if it's an '88 reg - the badge wasn't used til 1990; it'll be a "Ninety" if it's the original lump it should be a 2.5 turbo diesel, but then, it might not be the original one!

Anyhoo, :welcome2: to the asylum!!! Tell the family the indoor water features are all part of their charm ;)

many people use defender as a generic term for all 90's and 110's etc but true defenders were not built til later some anal people like to point this out at every chance they get seems if they know there facts they are a true landy fan but its just another form of train spotting or Landy spotting.

But for info without caps if it is a genuine 1988 model it should be a 2.5 Turbo diesel ninety. People quite easily get TD confused with TDi a later type model actually a defender that is a far superior engine in terms of performance. Anyways your landy may have had a 2.5na engine fitted or someone may well have taken the turbo off. You can check this by posting the first few letters of your engine no 12j is na and 19j is the turbo version of the same engine Jai

it'll be the 2.5 TD with the 19J engine, post a picture of the engine bay will confirm this

your turbo MIGHT have died, but it's more likely that your expecting it to go faster than it actually will - it's no sports car

if it's done much over 120k you can expect issues with split pistons and worn rings, both of which will reduce compresion and therefore performance

start saving a few 100 quid and put a 200Tdi out of a disco in it and it'll fly
 
I didn't have a lot of work yesterday so spent the afternoon looking at the landy. Fixed the water feature and the door is now bolted on right. The good news is I found that the fuel pump was leaking. This is now fixed and it now goes like a .........Landy

I will post a pic of the engine bay asap to see if I should have a turbo..

The hydralic clutch has lost fluid can this get into the bell housing?

Oh dear it would appear someone has fitted a Natural Aspirated (2.5N/A) Lump in there. you'll have a top speed of about 60mph if you are very very lucky.

Hydraulics on the clutch are Mastercylinder on the bulkhead & slave cylinder underneath the engine. The seals usually go and on the master cylinder it drips onto the clutch pedal & on the slave cylinder it drips on to the floor under the car.
 
2.5 NAD, looks exactly like my old lump. They are not the quickest but they will get you there. Expect 60mph top end and heart failure on long hills but that`s ok as other drivers seem to respect a landy poootling up a hill. Enjoy the new addition!
