UPDATE...

After driving it back from the garage after having battery charged for 24hrs and them checking alternator and stuff theis is todays encounter it like east enders this range rover turning into a new toy nightmare quickly..

Ok parked on drive over night all seemed ok, got up this morning tried to start it perfect happy with that, swtiched it off after 2/3 mins on idle and went to work in my other car, got home 3pm thought right lets go out for a drive in it..

Started up reversd off drive and the SUSPENSION FAULT light came on :( turned and drove down my street 100 yards and sat nav screen went blank, 5/6 lights now on dash, mixture of all sorts ARGGHH another 100 yards down road rev counter goes off and speedo then lcd display in middle and then the whole lot went out, engine running still though, knocked all the electrical items off and drove 3 miles to mates garage..

Noticed on way the gear selector LCD display was showing a large capital F for ****ed and said limited gears ??? revs were 4rpm at 45mph so i assume its in 3rd gear.. got to garage and left running in Park till got a look at it 4/5 mins tried to move it wont come out of park ?? FFS man, turned engne off and went to restart click click click no battery power, so jusmp pack on starts up, now will move out of park..

Reversed back 10 feet all lights off and gradually coming on warning lights i mean till had 7 on at once.. TIME TO BURN IT LOL...

Called 4x4 dealer specailist and took it through, they checking it tomorrow...

Now simce i took it through ive found this out see if this might be the cause maybe..

THE SPORT SEEMS TO GO OK WITH A FULLY CHARGE BATTERY BUT AS IT DRAINS ITS THROWING ALL SORTS UP.. BUT IVE FOUND THIS OUT TODAY LATE ON 6PM...

The garage thought the battery was sluggish so replaced the battery after test drive, which it drove fine on as they didnt want any issues (ironic or what) but here is what ive found the battery that came off was a 110 amp and the replacement is a 84 amp but same size in physical size, but a cheapish one year battery ?

COULD THE BATTERY BE AT FAULT I DONT UNDERSTAND ELECTRICS,could the battery that was originally one just be low on charge due to cold and valeters with doors open etc etc me with all heated bits on as well, and then garage fits this battery and all the faults appear ????

Any advice would be helpful

Yes an under powered Battery will fook a sport up. BUt if fully charged with a good alternator yu'd not expect it to die that qhickly. SO there has to be an underlying fault that's draining the Battery. Have you tried getting in touch with the previous owner to find out why htey got shot of it.??

Personally I'd walk away and find another one.
 
i just hope its coincidental that when i test drove it all was fine but radio was only working to vol 20 but it might of been due to low power as it had been valaeted and stood with doors open etc, and then the combination of a smaller battery is just continueing the problem ???

Well it might but you're clutching at straws.. IMO.. I still don't understand why you're spending time repairing it charging testing etc. anyone with any sense would have phoned the dealer and got him to collect it and sort it out..

At the end of the day you've asked for advise. My advice is send it back and let him sort it. If he can't fix it then get a full refund and go elsewhere. It's not like Sports are hard to find..

If you got it for a super low price Ask yourself why??
 
Its a weird situation though dealer wise...

Its a smaller independent guy whom i got it off and it wasnt a full retail sale it was sort of trade and he took it in and stuck a drink on it and i got it sort of deal, i know him well as a fellow sort of trader as i buy and sell cheap cars under 2k etc.. and he kept it as cheap as possible as a favour but like i said it seemed all ok till the battery went on but i only drove it 8 miles i suppose...its a bit awkward but i paid most cash a little part ex and borrowed a bit too..

Doesn't matter what the deal was he's still required by Law to fully reimburse you. As a dealer yourself you know the score.. Not fit for purpose and not as described both cover it.

try a new fully charged Battery by all means If you really want it that badly. What have you got to lose..
 
Yeah its over at the 4x4 specailists now to make a start on tomorrow see what happens, the garage/mate/dealer has already told them to fit the best quality battery for the sport whie its there to see if its that, time will tell though...
 
Do your research on some battery websites and insist on the most powerful battery that will fit, there are many similar owners who have had this problem and a battery upgrade has fixed it but as already said its the dealer who should be sorting it for you. Mate or no mate you have parted with alot of your hard earned to own this car.

If its not sorted tomorrow drive it through his ****ing showroom window :D:violent: Lock and load!

Its the alternator... the new RR's require one hell of an amount of power and charge just to keep all the toys working...when that drops the battery doesnt charge ,,the ecu gets confused and all the toys start shutting down or screaming errors because the power isnt constant and without spikes...imagine trying to run your laptop of a pedal powered dynamo..... you couldnt keep the power at a constant and it would keep shutting down.... the alternator needs to be 100% effective and so does the battery.

Take it back and get the alt replaced..the dealer wont like it because a brand new one for my L322 was £1000 from LR. However the recon unit I got was £250... when mine went ...for a week before the sat nav would shut down for no reason,the HDC would shout inactive and loads of small niggly electrical thing happened....when it finally gave up......well jesus 20mins before the car was acting like a clown mobile with susp going up and down, error lights everything..then bing..red battery light and dead in five mins...

To show you how bad it is when the battery completely dies you cant even get the key out of the ignition... its is that reliant on the electrics so imagine how an undercharging alt will confuse the ecu's, speed sensors, sat nav etc..

get him to sort it and dont take no for an answer.......:boxing:

Without doubt it's the alternator failing to provide adequate charge. If you like the car and it was a good deal persevere. You need the biggest battery that will fit and a good alternator. Once the engine is running, it's the alternator that provides all the power for the electrics not the battery, although a duff battery can load up the alternator and pull the voltage down.

I stand by my original answer two pages ago....

I agree with Datatek, the Alternator is mostly likely shagged or if the battery is duff, it will drag the alternator output too low and the systems will fail....

If you got a warranty on the car look into that to change the alternator....else go back to the dealer and get a refund....but being a second hand vehicle offered 'Sold as Seen' no doubt unless the seller made reference to the fact the vehicle was 100% functional....

Let the Buyer beware as they used to say (Caveat Emptor), but this was replaced by the Sale of Goods Act....might be worth a read.

Definatly Alternator and Battery related.

New battery that was fitted has been removed and checked battery is ok but only a 82AH battery one that came off was a 110ah so a new 110ah battery has been fitted..

Alternator was tested whilst other (small battery) was fitted and the charge rate was poor 13.8 v at idle 14.1 at best revved up both with no load on
Once load was applied like heated seats and heaters etc the battery voltage dropped and droped the more you switched on it came as low as 7.4v at one point and cut out,they tested a 2.7 disco 3 next to it to compare and the disco had 14.8v constent and only dipped below 13.8v once with everything turned on at once and then went back to 14.2v with everything on...

Specailist in convinced its an alternator issue and fitting one tomorrow..

hopefully it will be sorted with the new 110ah battery and the alternator tomorrow..

Just a deal update too

With reguard to the above the dealer/mate i got it off is replacing the battery with a 110ah unit free of charge and replacing the alternator and labour free of charge..

I took a independant warrenty out on this 3 days ago cant see them being happy if i claim that quick though can you...

im happy if it gets sorted though..

Hi guys got the sport back appears to be all sorted now,

New battery of correct size and AH rating and a brand new alternator..

All checked after fitting and charging at 14.4v with everything on so it looks like yous were correct with alternator diagnosis fellas.

I asked them as they were staratone trained specailist independents to give the sport a full inspection tip to toe to let me know what is required in the future and now and there are a couple of jobs needed doing striagt away as well...

2 front tyres cracking on side walls
service over due by 200 miles
rear discs and pads slightly corroded

so that will keep my wallet empty for a bit longer lol :lol:

as long s it starts and stops im happy will get some tyres this week.

285.35ZR 22" MMMmmm not cheap i bet..
 
Did you even look at the car before you bought it?

I am glad its sorted though, and hopefully you will be fault free for some time so that you can trust the car.
