Car failed on welding. Thought i'd have a go myself this time. But as I knocked around the chassis. All I thought was scrap. Untill I started cutting it out and found an inch up there was least 2mm of metal so I got some 3mm plate and set too. This is my first time welding by the way. Spent a week in the shed getting use to the mig. I'm reasonably happy with how its turning out.
Sorry if the pics are too big. Not had time to sort photo bucket out. IMAG1638.jpg

:D used flux. for some reason gas doesnt last too long. But I do live Nr the sea and theres hell of a breeze coming off the front. Cold aswell. So I thought flux best. As I say. Gotta start somewhere.

Well f@@k me never thought of that. Great Idea. Sister-in-law runs a pub. I'll bell them tomorrow. Cheers. Have used 80 20 Argon mix and must admit. It's nicer feel to weld. and hardly any splatter at all. When your on your back and a splatter bit somehow manages to find it's way on your head. It's not nice.

I just use straight CO2, not quite as good as argoshield but does the job well and cheap too!

Big bottle lasts about 8 hours on 20psi I find, get a welders hood if you're really concerned about neck splatter, I just put up with it and grow my hair longish so it acts the same

Im not going to comment about your welding mate as we all have to start and to be quite honest mine isnt the best at times. Fair play to you for doing it rather than starting a "how much should i pay a garage to weld this" thread.:D

I don't mind criticism. Usually a mate does it. But to be honest I couldn't be bothered with his moaning. But I do like having a go. Great feeling when it's done. That's why I like mi disco. Easy to work on. Just wish I had a garage. :)

Good call on the garage mate same for me. I would also actually like to be at home once in a while to actually drive/tinker with mine. Ive had it about three weeks now and only done about 80miles in it. Ordered some new door springs for it and they have been the glove box for two weeks as i havnt been home yet lol

Well once you start. You just want to carry on. on and on. Good fun tho, When you get the time. I got other projects on the go. so I do a bit on each every day. weather permitting. Hopefully will get done eventually.

Well done mate you have inspired me to get oot there and do mine :D just bought a mig welder. But fook me, I was worried about the hole the MOT guy left in my chasis but damn, mines looks bugger all compared to yours (no Offence ment). And I too had a mate to do mine before but figure that with these landy's its going to be a worthy investment in the long run and a new skill too (hopefully). And for what its worth, I thought the welds looked amazing, so not really sure what everyone is sniggering about saying ''you need to start somewhere'' If mine look half as good as that I'll be well chuffed.

I found that out too once you start welding the dam thing you may as well do the lot:) mines been off road since september last year ....Ive a excelent strong chassie on mine but the boddy were shot ....all over new boot flore bought/rear door inner archers bought ..and I've done all the body mounts x member wheel arches.. the list goes on n on lol:eek::eek:.....so I've done it with 4mm plate (double thickness.....I've done it in that because it didnt cost me owt lol)....god hard to work with don't bend but very strong ...I went a bit too far and made all the inner and outer sills in 4mm too....I must be mad ....but on the plus side I tested the hi lift jack on them ...no problem:D:D.....but don't get carried away with the welder like I did lol....but looking good mate

Cheers for them comments guys. I must admit if it wasn't for this site and seeing how many people give it a go I wouldn't have attempted it. I'm ok with mechanics but im glad ive taken the challenge. Watched loads of vids on youtube. took advice off here. bought a load of different thicknesses of metal. box, sheet and plate. Welded it in such ways as i might on the car. upside down push and pull weld every which way poss. Then took a grinder to chassis hoped for the best. took my time. patch on the back i cut out completely and but joined it. took me 2 hours just to do that. But the money i'll save i'll own my own welding gear plus still be £400 up. or not spent... So now do i get a plasma cutter. might give it a miss. As not much more to do now. Unless I decide to replace the sills with box section. Disco phil If you give it a go and you manage it the money you save will be phenomenal. if you feel you can't then you will have no trouble getting your money back for the welder. so nothing lost really and everything to gain.
Way I see it if you own an old landy. then you need to know how to do everything. which is all part of the fun. other wise you need very deep pockets so may as well buy new one.
