Hi all,
I've owned my disco for just over a year now, and already it's on it's 3rd pair of front discs, (inc' the ones that were on it at time of purchase).

Seems as though they work well for the first two months or so, then they start juddering when I brake. They're bearable for the following two months, although gradually getting worse up to the point when it feels like I'm driving a pneumatic hammer.

I've noticed that the guide pins on the front rhs are worn, (surface worn flat along the length).
Going to replace these, along with the discs and pads.

Does anyone have any clues why I'm getting through so many discs?

Stu.

I took it to "Ultimate Land rover" a speshlist near me.
They tested the brakes and fitted new front discs and pads about 3 mths back.
I asked them if they could check for a seized caliper etc, they told that it was just the discs that had warped.

What goes wrong with the calipers that could lead to warping of discs?
What signs of wear should I look for?

Stu.

apparently the pad stops wear, allowing the pads to move closer the centre of the disks. I wasnt aware that this caused disks warping, however if the pads were closer to the centre of the disk then more breaking pressure might be needed, with consequential overheating.

its a long shot tho.

Do you think that worn guide pins could put the caliper and pads out of true?
Your suggestion, although you say it's a long shot, does sound good. The juddering does get worse the longer you drive for and with more frequent brake applications, which ties in with what you say.
I'll check them tomorrow.
I assume the "pad stops" are part of the casting that is fixed to the hub, (brake pad carrier). Hmm, wonder if I can buy this piece seperately, bet I can't.
I can't think of anything on the caliper itself which could physically hold the pads away from the centre of the disc.

Thanks for the help so far.

when yu slide the pads into the caliper they go down to the pad stops and (surprise) stop at that point. when they wear, the pads move progressively further "into" the caliper and therefore closer to the middle of the disk.

Justa thort, but if one pad stops wears more than the other then uneven pressure would be applied across the disk - that mite also cause distortion of the disk.
