Hi just a little story of how i went wading today in door sill depth ford and blew my headlight bulbs to smitherines, they just exploded. Some how water got into the head lights??? I bought some new bulbs but don't know how to replace them? I went to remove the front headlight surround but there are some star shaped screws with a little point in the middle which won't allow my star shaped screw driver bit to undo them. The headlight is still full of water and bits of exploded bulb. Halfords is shut and i can't get the buggers off. Is there a water proof headlight system on the market or should i just seal them with clear silicone?

Thanks Terra Dog

P.S there is a hole where it looks like there should be a side light bulb but obviously they are seperate. The car in question is a 1991 Defender 90.

what motor ya driving? most headlamp bulbs just plug into the back of the headlamp unit. Series & early 90/110's were fitted with sealed beam units. if ya gonna be doing a lot of wading it'd be worth putting up with dim headlamps and fitting sealed beam units.

Sealed beam units? I just looked in the landy manual and you have to remove the lights from the front after taking the indicators and side lights out first? Does anybody have a clue what the screw type is holding the light housing on, it's a star shaped screw head with i pin in the middle of it???

Your bulbs can't get wet if they're sealed beam.

Just unscrew the black plastic light cover off the front of the wing. and there should be 3 slotted screws holding a headlamp in place.

Yeh i understand how to change the bulb, i'm trying to find out what tool i need to remove the light housing, its a star shape screw head with a pin in the middle of it?

My dad said to snap off the pin inside the starscrew but instead i'm picking some Torx screw drivers up tomorro, £14 from screwfix. I tried snaping it off but looked a bit dodgy and didn't feel right so left it before i wrecked it. Cheers for all the comment's, much appreciated guys.

torx/star bit same thing unless u r purist

or a mechanic or someone who uses tools all the time

drill a wee hole in the center of the torx bit with a pillar drill?

now that i would like to see! just put the 90 in the pillar drill to drill out tje centres

there is a nice bitset in the latest britool promotion (only £9.95 + vat)
it has them bits in then all you need is a bit driver :)
