Don't fit lt77 of you can help it Jim, I like mine cos its the original bit I wish I hadn't spent 300 quid rebuilding it, cos its still a ****er to get into second and it's a pain to get into reverse!

R380 is smooth as silk once the second gear synchro is sorted!

ye , they are a better box , more bearings in them init:confused: just want me drive train sorting something less to worry about.

i wouldnt say r380 is a better box than lt77 ,r380 does have 2 extra bearings in rear housing but only needs them because reverse gear and 5th are in rear housing, either box in good condition would be fine by me

my lt77 is ok , not stiff, but it seems to rattle alot now , like the release bearing is being shaken if you no what i mean:confused: not got the box out yet, but maybe the splines are worn. alot of noise when clutch is not pressed down,, or is it fooked flywheel....

usual cause of rattle in neutral that goes when clutch pedal pressed or engine revs increased is clutch plate ,springs too loose or too strong,if gear box was really that bad it wouldnt drive well

paddock clutch kit fitted 10k ago.. heavy duty . no flywheel fitted. was ok now getting loud.... so is it worth doing

Mines the original LT77S, v8 spec with cooler pipes.

Original box, has always had bad second synchro.

Summer of 2010 went for reverse and nothing happened, snapped selector fork apparently
Anyway box out and a combination of wanting to stay original and lack of v8 manual boxes around, I had it rebuilt at cost £300.

Was nice when it came back. They said it was good internally, bearings fine etc, so just did fork and couple new synchro hubs.

18 months later it's still and awkward bugger to get into reverse, it's not easy to get into first from standstill and recently second gear synchro has left the building so it snicks quite badly on the upchange if i change with anger at high revs, and I have to double clutch on the downchange.

Other than that it's a nice box

suffix g was the best box imo suffix h had compound baulk rings on 1st and 2nd which are a weak link and can be tricky to ensure are perfect when rebuilding,i doubt rev lever snapped but the can come adrift ,synchroi hubs rarely need changing just new slipper pads and springs and need to be kept with 2 halves in relation with each other ,bearings should really allways be changed along with baulk rings,if synchro hubs are worn on dog teeth so will be its corresponding gear

Tbh James I wish I'd known of you when it happened :)

Went to Tameside transmissions for a 300 squid semi rebuild. Still thought it was ****ing dear if you ask me but I was again young and not knowledged at the time.

I should have asked advice and stripped it myself.

Anyway hey ho, I'm managing with it it's just annoying.

Especially seeing as I have the v8 and with its new exhaust system it's not a slouch, so the bad snick into second at traffic light grand prix is really not ideal.

Thanks again for info :)

no mines , sweet, not a problem to get any gears , only thing when its cold , slight crunch going to third , if not smooth, when warm its fine. just the bloody noise when not in gear... yes nice info james .....

Jim I suppose the diesel boxes do chatter a bit though? The v8 purrs so you don't get any chatter :)

ye the v8 is a pussycat, lol... my problem is , iam always going , oh whats that noise , whats that clonk lol. sometimes i forget, its a old landrover , just live with it....:)

Yes that's true mate, they are quite musical cars. You'll know it's broke when it's broke, but most noises are there just to let you know everything's working sweet :D

I think the lack of chatter is why mine managed 18 years without a cross drilled input gear and the output shaft is not far off new, maybe lost 10 to 20 thou off each spline face.

Have fitted cross drilled gear now so I'm happy it's not wearing further.

Cheers JM :)
