Good evening all.

So my new project is a 1983 RRC 2 door and i am slowly sourcing parts, Next on the list a R380 gearbox. Am i right in saying that an easy way to tell them apart from a LT77 in photos is the the R380 does not have a thread on the end of the output shaft?

Cheers Landy Lee

Lt77 also has a drain plug on the extension casing that the 380 does not, the drain plug/filter is on the bottom face of the extension case.

Item 23.

Cheers for the info mate.

I do know this and that the reverse position is different but what i am asking is what visual indications are there between the two so i can tell what is a LT77 or a R380?

Not all sellers know what they have and some sellers are hard to get hold of to ask questions.

For example you see a gearbox for sale on FB marketplace saying "landy gearbox" but the gearboxes look very similar so need visual differences to identify.

Ok.
from my link above.

LT77/LT77S/R380 Gearbox No. Serial No. Location

You should find the Gearbox Serial Number Stamped on a machined flat near the Drain Plug area, please see the picture below.

The Number Consists Of :

  • A Prefix e.g. 56A
  • A six digit numerical
  • A Suffix Letter. Suffix A to H is an LT77 Transmission, Suffix J onwards is an R380 Transmission.
You can also tell an LT77 Gearbox from R380 Gearbox by the position of the Reverse Gear on the Gearstick:

  • If Reverse is next to 1st gear you have an LT77 gearbox (or possibly LT85, see LT85 section).
  • If Reverse is below 5th you have an R380 transmission.
