We have a 300tdi disco. It was always pretty boat like with the handling, but im getting increasingly suspicious that more is wrong than by design.

Symptoms -

When cornering at low speed (25mph ish) it sometimes feels like the back is slipping away, like it would do if you hit ice or oil.

When driving at 40-50ish the motor feels like it pulls to the side (not always the same side) just like when you get hit by side wind. Its also very similar to when youre driving in the slow lane of a motorway, where the trucks have created ruts in the tarmac, and then you bump about in the ruts.

I was thinking id order a "Floflex Polyurethane Bush kit" from paddocks (i dont want to spend the extra on the superpro one at this stage) and replace bits here and there.

Is this a reasonable plan? And, if so, where should i start?

(i dont have a hydraulic press, so i planned to go for the easy ones first, but, that said, there's no point in wasting my time on things that have no chance of being any good)

Thank you.

Have a look at these large bushes on you vehicle, (link is only for the picture) Land Rover Mount NTC 9027 from Progressive Gears Industries (P) Ltd,Delhi,India,ID: 7178856534

If they are worn that will definitely give the so called rear wheel steering affect and simple to replace.
You do know how to check for wear in the bushes don't u.

Thank you, and no...

Somthing about jacking up the vehical, putting it on stands, and then using a pry bar, somwhere?. But not knowing quite where, and also how much movement a 'good' unit would have, and how much a 'bad' one has, i think ill find it difficult to quantify.

But, yeah, in short, no, i dont know how to check, so any guidance would be welcomed.

Okay, start with the simplest so with that bush as shown if the rubber has become detached from the steel washers even by few millimetres then replace the bush on each side of the vehicle that's what gives the "rear wheel steering".

Do you have any knocking sounds when turning corners or going over potholes etc which can indicate a faulty bush, and yes using a pry bar with a visual appearance of the bush can indicate an issue, not that easy to do I would think unless its on the ramp.

I'd be checking for play in steering box first, rock steering wheel from side to side and how much movement you have before wheels move

Check wheel bearing play, steering joints / bushes and steering box for excessive play and sounds daft but make sure tyre pressures are correct and that everything spins right

Just had a look at the bushes on the triangular plates.

Scraped about with a flat head screwdriver, and tried to get it between the rubber and the metal, but couldnt. Its grim outside, so i was just crouching, rather than lying in the puddles.

The plates themselves are flaking, but it all looks in one piece. The rubber is crazed like the palm of your hand, but not cracked.

Basically, there (unfortunatly) did not seem to be any obvious defects.

I have not checked any of the other points mentioned yet.

I did not finish up this thread -

The wheel bearings were very slightly loose, which made a small bit of difference, and then i changed the two front tyers, which cleared up the rest of it.

Im told that, on older rubber, the side walls can become more flexible, which causes this kind of issue - but, anyhow, the two things together were enough to get me looking at things, and its sorted now.

Thanks for the responses above.
