Whilst under the bonnet today of my 300 tdi,i noticed that the fan seems to take about a minute to catch up with the engine speed. I know they work on a clutch. This to me doesn't seem quite right althou i do stand to be corrected. Also it doesn't seem to be as stiff as it used to(the fan that is). So my question is do these fail that oftern. I don't want to take it off.
cheers alex

Thing is thou it seem lose when hot and stiffer when cold. But the temp gauge does seem to be higher than normal. Nothing to worry about just wonder if the fan's clutch has had it like my transmission had last week lol.

Hi Alex, the sequence of a correctly working viscous fan is a follows:

1. On a cold engine the fan will appear stiff to turn;

2. On an engine at normal operating temp the fan will be easy to turn;

3. When the engine gets hot, the fan stiffens up to give more cooling.

Hope that helps

Dave

Yep sounds nearly right lol. After a long run. Switch off the engine then restart straight away,and the fan turns quite slowly,after reving a cuple of times no change in fan speed. Then after about a minute it seems to slowly speed up. Until you rev it again. You have to hold it at a set rev for about a minute, before the fan speed matches engine speed.

bin the bloody thing - took mine off 2 years ago and never looked back - gained a couple of mpg into the bargain.
it dont run hot - EVER not when towing a farm trailer or the banger dolly

Go off road and you'll want electric fans anyway.

I vote electric, not sure about no fans though! But I do have a v8.

id love some electric fans, stop the water getting thrown all over the engine bay! Dont think running without one would be a good idea on a V8

Well... Funny you should mention it, the only drawback to electric fans is forgetting to turn them on!

I was doing some casual winching, took us ages to yank it up out of an impassable gulley, and just ticking over it blew water out of the header tank it got so hot.

But yeah 'leccy fans are brill. I learnt my lesson there!

Got a good few pc fans lmao will they do it. I drained the cooling system,flushed and refilled. No more smells,althou the fan still isn't working as it did. Yes i know that changing the coolant won't fix the fan.

Viscous fan unit is cheap.

Most I have seen are knackered, get a freshun and you know you're ridin cool.

Pc fans aren't gonna work :D but if you don't want kenlowe at 200 quid, try the cheaper ones on eBay, I got two 12" for 100 and they work well, or go to a brelaers and find some oem fans off a car for about 30!

Good mod though :)

the fan hubs are known for failing, top tip, bin it... fit twin kenlowe's with a temp switch.. def if on a v8, no fan not good idea....
