you should have let someone who knew what they were doing sort it - you'd have lost bugger all

I've used this before, on a friends PC, with good results .. more than the friend bargained for anyway. He had some more 'personal' shots of him and his missus which he'd forgotten about .. ;)

all yer photos and anything else important need to be on more than one harddrive, theres lots of options, copy them to cd, or a large memory stick , or a harddrive in a box that plugs into yer usb.... even have them on yer laptop and yer desktop.. harddrives do fail even without a virus and then theres nowt that can be done.
most times data on a virus infected drive can be rescued by takin the drive out the puter and connecting it as an external drive to another machine.

the other simple way is to get a linux boot cd into the affected puter the machine will then run on linux from the cd instead of the corrupted windows from the harddrive , but you can then access the data files and transfer them to memory stick or cd before you wipe the drive to reinstall windows.

golden rule is dont panic and ask for advice before doing anything.

of course there is, there's an entire industry based around the recovery of data from apparently ''broken'' hard drives and similar media

I no i should have backed up , i have 2.5 tarabyte of space, memo sticks and a pile of discs,
but no landy photos :Cry::Cry:

good job it was none of the wifes stuff else i'd have no balls aswell

theres a big difference between an "apparently broken" drive and a broken one.

just how are you going to recover data from a drive where the actual disc has physically broken?

Stop digging holes .. I can't do anything with it, but I know people who can physically rebuild a hard drive ..

Have you ever seen a hard drive that has physically broken?

What was physically broken?

The limit of my ability is replacing and cloning the board on it if it fries, but there are companies about who can rebuild _anything_ .. almost!

if the ''disc'' or more accurately the platters, are physically broken I would suggest that the owners were past caring about a few landy pictures - the fact that the OP has been able to re-install his OS indicates the drive is perfectly functional

physically breaking a platter (most modern drives have numerous platters) is VERY VERY difficult in normal use

the most common ''damage'' is due to bad sectors, or simple component failure on the controller board, throw in a few seek head errors ..... all easy to read and recover from

I have seen drives that came from buildings that were raised to the ground by fire - the platters are usually perfectly intact and easily readable

provided you have circa 10k worth of equipment

+ 1,
ricc stop twittering about **** you obviously know nothing about, cock end, i thank you and good night:rolleyes:

it can be done - difficult, expensive, but it can be done.

Agreed

Its VERY rare that a failed drive cannot be recovered even if the heads have crashed against the disk. Considering that data is spread across the platters using magnectic technology, even if the board were to fry, or the motors fail, the data is still intact. Even fire or water damaged devices have been known to be salvageable. You just need the tools and knowledge to do the job.

With regards to backup, I would strongly suggest anyone with a lot of data runs a small NAS plugged into the back of there wireless router.

I have a 2TB NAS with mirrored disks (so if one fails like it did last week the data is still safe). On my laptop I run a small app, so anything I put on the laptop gets immediately backed up to the NAS, so my backup copy is never out of date.

Apologies to any of you who I've put to sleep with that.

Amongst other things i always install at least two OS's so if one goes down you can still access everything via the other.

Thanks lads, most of that went over my head but some makes sense,

some one told me he uses his pc on a geust admin acount for protection,
is there any advantage in safty or owt in doing this?
