Hi all,

My 1.8 K Freelander developed the all too common cylinder head gasket coolant seepage. In short, I found that it was due to clamping load having been lost where the head bolts bolt in to the oil rail.

So when I renewed the head gasket, I believe I did it correctly by also renewing the oil rail to the recent uprated one as it seems to have better clamping load. And since then, no more coolant leaks, no more overheating, no more rough idle. Mind you, I also used Hylomar sealant on the engine block surface, on both side of the steel shim and both sides of the head gasket, but none on the cylinder head face. Since finishing that job yesterday, I've never heard my 1.8 K series Freelander engine running quieter. I renewed the head gasket on the same car back in 2012 butr neglected to renew the oil rail (I didn't use any sealant either) and in March of 2014 it loss clamping load and coolant started to leak out of the head gasket area.

This appears to be a very common issue affecting Freelander and I shot this video in the hope that it will reassure many of you and encourage that these are spectacular cars to drive once you have this fixed and fixed correctly. And by fixed correctly, I would recommend you renew the oil rail when investing the time to do this work. I would also recommend Hylomar sealant be used on the head gasket : I have proven in my video with a snake type stethoscope camera which I shoved in to the engine block after gasket and bolts all went on and torqued, I have proven that Hylomar sealant has not blocked any of the coolant passage ways in the head gasket.

Here's my video.
