its a weird one but i seem to have a vibration which is most noticeable between 1500-2000 rpm. Things I noticed:
1. doesnt matter if it is in gear or clutch pressed/depressed
2. tried to change front and rear props
3. unlikely (i hope) that its engine mounts as they were changed 3/4 years ago for a genuine pair.
4. does not go away when engine warms up... actually i think it gets worst.
5. vibration doesnt feel through the steering wheel but more across the cabin, if it makes sense.
6. i think it needs a new tensioner but doubt it will make it vibrate like that? anyway its going in tomorrow as it just arrived :D
7. i dont think it is just during that range or rpm but certainly most noticeable.
what other culprits? maybe the pulley harmonic damper?

Lots of people find this. But at varying revs.

 then i'm wondering how can it be in gear without clutch depressed while it's stationary based on your statement:
remove the drive belt, rev it up to that rpm where the symptom occurs and see what happens then

sorry for asking but considering water pump runs through the belt (I think?) how safe is it to run it without the belt?

It's safe to run it from cold for a while, enough to give it a good listen prolly.!;)
I once limped a Mk1 Cortina a few miles with a bust crank pulley, which in those days drove the pump. I just had to stop every few hundred yards and let it cool down a bit. So you should be OK.

It's about a very short time for troubleshooting reasons so you can run that engine even without water in it... if the vibration is not there with belt removed at least you know where to start but if it's still the same you can rule out all the pulleys... got it?

I pulled the belt off and noticed the ace pump pulley and crank damper pulley both have some movement, maybe 2mm. Is this normal? I also have the typical squeak when switching off the engine? Could any of this cause vibrations as i describe?

Is the vibration gone with belt moved? if yes then any pulley which has a play can cause it, or the belt tensioner too... you'll have to rule them out somehow... if you didnt start the engine with belt removed to see how it behaves this discussion is futile

i think its a little better, the vibration is usually more noticeable with the engine warm i think but it feels smoother

Well more worryingly after running it for a few seconds without a belt, now i cannot get it to start!!

Battery seems good and i charged it for good measure. I can hear fuel pump running, doesnt look immobilized. But nothing from the starter motor...Whats happening

Well a little wiggle of the starter cable and it started right up... So also gotta clean the starter contacts now... Dont we all love discos

If the vibration is still there with belt removed even if a bit smoother which can be due to less load means that it's quite unlikely to be from a pulley, do you have a scantool to see injector roughness? Uneven injection can cause strange vibrations too. Is the ECU red plug free of oil?

My first thought was oil in the harness. The engine could be stuttering slightly and this feels like a vibration through the cabin !!
