i once had a diff problem that only presented itself in 3rd 4th and 5th. it was more of a whine though.

i though it was transmission but swapped diffs out to fit lockers and noise went away. i had no idea until inspecting diffs and found pitted teeth.

yours could have broken teeth, bad bearing etc.

if its not the prop it has to be the diff!

No, prop feels good, it must only be about 2 years since I changed the UJ's on that prop. The noise was bad like all the bearings have gone completely and its just shaking around in a hole. Mine is not like this.

transfer outputs or perhaps more likely a diff problem yes.

as jamesmartin says though its worth checking the front prop as noises can travel throught the transmission and throw you off the scent sometimes.

especially now the front prop is working harder it might have changed its characteristic.

good luck :)

I took the hand brake drum off and the output flange is ok.

Road tested again, I think the slap and diff lock could be some slack in the gear box and the handbrake drum over spinning confusing the diff lock?

well if it is allright now and original problem gone i would look at diff .there is some slack in diff lock as it has to have enough play to allow it to go in/out easily, may be have a look at ensuring linkage is set right so that when you do need it it is in fully and comes out fully ,its could to use lever regulary to keep it from seizing

thats good its just with you saying it was jumping out ,it can only do that if not fully in or there is wear/play in front output bearing or diff bearings as diff lock is the connection of diff housing to front output shaft with sliding tube or dog clutch ,snatch on take up of drive youd expect

jack wheels up and spin and feel both wheels and diff flange, most common to wear is front bearing just behind pinion but normaly gives worse noise on overun ,carrier bearings wear too though and would give noise on power

ok, so I did try that earlier and all felt smooth.

Rear prop back on and still the same problem.

I think I am going to stop for tonight and hope I can get to and from work tomorrow with no issues and then check the front prop tomorrow.

Cheers

Bit of an update, check the front half and changed 1 UJ on the prop. Still no better, the only thing I can find that is slightly wrong is the front output shaft from the gear box is very slightly wobbly. I am guessing this is the probelm. So....

How do I change the bearing in here or what do I need to do?

Thanks

feel it by rotating and pulling on it at same time .they do move a bit as flange is supported by ball bearing, can be changed by removing nut 30mm socket ,removing flange .prise seal out ,remove cir clip (refit circlip right way round as there is a wrong with holes for pliers with the smallest side of tapered holes towards pliers) refit nut prise shaft and bearing out aginst nut and housing ,bearing is stc1130 ,fill seal with grease or vaseline to hold garter spring in place while tapping seal back in

wow you make it sound so simple! It does rotate but also feels a little slopy side to side but only by a couple of mm. The only other think I was thinking is if there is low oils in gear box and diffs etc. but also cant see how this would cause a problem like this.

follow Busters guide :D

Yes you are correct however it is the only thing I can find with any problem.

could it be internal to diffs or gear box if the fluid levels are wrong?
