Very very occasionally my 1999 TD5 will not start. It has only happened twice in the past three months but is a bit worrying.
This morning for instance, I started it from cold and reversed out of the drive and switched off to shut gates etc
When I came to restart, some, but not all of the warning lights came on and nothing happened when I turned the key. Lit warning lights did not go dim, and I did notice that the glow plug light did not come on as usual
After two of three goes at switching the ignition on and off, all lights appeared and it started OK.
A similar thing happened about two months ago after driving about 80 miles so it appears to happen both if engine is hot or cold
Any help would be appreciated.

on earlier discovery's I have heard that the spider can casue this.. I am not sure if this is an issue for the td5...

mine does this also but I tracked it to a faulty switch on the gearbox - if I don't drop it into park quite firmly it happens..

There is ring around the ignition barrel that picks up the signal from the chip in the key/fob. It could be that the key/fob isn't close enough to the ring to deactivate the immobiliser. Next time it does it try holding the fob right up to the ignition barrel.

Many thanks Ratty, I think you may have nailed the problem. When I think about it, on both occasions that it would not start, I had removed the ignition key.so your suggestion is a likely answer.
Thanks,
Dave

No probs. The other thing you can do is to press unlock on the key fob again when you are about to re-insert the ignition key.
