valve stem oil seals

im here again

can anybody tell me if its possible to change the valve stem oil seals without removing the head
i hope it is

I ant done it but dont reckon you can cos you'll have to take the valve springs off.

What engine?

You can get various tools as follows:

• an adapter for a compressor so that compressed air can pressurise the combustion chamber to hold the valves closed;
• a special spring compressor so you can get the caps/collets off without getting under the valves; and
• magnetic collet holders so you don't drop them into the head.
• (plus stuff like valve seal pliers)

I've not tried doing this. And someone will be along in a minute to tell you that it is possible to feed rope down the plug hole into the combustion chamber and then turn the crank to raise the piston so the pressure on the rope holds the valve closed - haven't tried this either.

My view is that you may as well have the head off to check for other stuff and lap the valves.

You dont say what engine you have, generally speaking a diesel on tdc has very little clearance for the valves . so you just need to depress the spring to release the collets I have done this on a perkins in the past You need to be sure that the piston is at tdc but you should be able to detect any valve/piston clearance by GENTLY depressing the valve before you remove the spring.
