Hi all,

I'm wanting to check/adjust the timing on my recently acquired 96 v8 disco but unsure what the marks indicate. My Haynes suggested I would find a lovely TDC mark with degrees either side but this is not the case.

All I can find when looking down at the crankshaft pulley from the airbox side is a half cm or so channel across the pulley and a point on the alloy casting at the front of the block.

The pointer hits the middle of the groove at 0 degrees and with 2 degrees dialled into the strobe it hits the edge.

Haynes say 5 degrees btdc but another manual I have says 4? I think I am showing TDC? Am I reading this right? The reason I want to sort it is I am suffering a bit of knock under load, less so on gas but I reckon this would be expected due to octane rating.

Any help is much appreciated by someone who really wants to get this disco running right before it knocks itself to pieces!

Cheers,
Ritchie. :D

My 92 V8 has the markings on the pully both advance and retard markings, so perhaps your pully has been changed at some point?

Had a look at the rave CD for ya:

Ignition Timing: Dynamic at 800revs/min MAX Vacuum disconnected-

8.13:1 Compression (non catalyst) 2degBTDC +/- 1 deg
9.35:1 Compression (non catalyst) 4degBTDC +/- 1 deg
9.35:1 Compression (catalyst) 5degBTDC +/- 1 deg

Of cousre without the markings its gonna prove difficult to do, i can give you the pages that detail exact methods of setting the timing, just drop me a PM ;)

Every engine will be a little special and different from all other engines even of the same type, SO .... the BEST timing setting is the one that makes it run best!

It must not "pink" at all or it will do in a piston or three, so take care to set it as far advanced as it will JUST not be pinking under load, hot, running on petrol.

Usually I thjink the best way is this: you set the factory settings just to make it run, and then day after day you make little adjustments until it's as good as it's going to get.

Patience and a good ear is bound to be better than going to a dealer to pay some drug crazed oaf to get it wrong for £90 an hour labour.

Cheers guys,

Went out tonight and had a good old nose around only to find under the grime and muck some timing markings! So I have a nicely timed up V8 now (5BTDC) and it idles rock steady. Only had time for a little run out but it seems to run fine on petrol and gas.

It had been timed up previously to the groove I mentioned and after setting it up I dialled the advance jobber on the light which showed it had been timed with a frankly shocking 26 degrees of advance! I am shocked it was running right at all???? From the history it has only ever been garage maintained so it is a so called professional that had done that.

What are these rave CD's that I keep hearing being ...erm... raved about?

Thanks again for help,
Ritchie. :D
