this has been on my wish list for a while now , couple of things tho if anyone can help

im going rear wheel drive 5 speed, with no front prop, how do u lube the swivel top bearing?

also ,lack of levers on rear backplate for handbrake, salsbury?

Years ago I had a plan for a 2wd S2 - never went offroad and thought it'd be a laugh. Anyway it occurred to me that axles from an old FX4 London cab might fit. The front is coils and wishbones on it's own crosssmember IIRC, excellent turning circle, 16" wheels and of course rear has normal brakes. Never got round to even measuring up though so not sure it's a goer. Cabs are going up in value but I bet you could get those bits cheap enough. Good luck. Standard hubs on the front should keep the swivel pins lubed, its only a problem with FWH as far as I'm aware.

I believe the axle oil, as well as lubing the diff, also keeps parts moving at either end of the axle. If you take the front prop off, I would also take the diff out (spare for when you blow the rear!) but you would need a plate over the remaining hole to keep the oil in.

so looking for a conversion ring,spigot bush ect..... to use 2a box

oh! and the small matter of still looking for an engine

I'm sure the old range rovers had a drum brake on the back of the transfer box too. Was it actuated by cable rather than linkage? You might be lucky and find an engine with a gearbox and brake assembly still attached if you went to a specialist breakers.

....you're going to tell me all the Classics were 4 speed, aren't you.

all the 5 speed boxes use a lt230 which has a drum transmission brake,though you can get a conversion to fit a series t/box on a 5 speed box,early 4 speed rrc had a drum too with rod linkage
 
maybe so, but ill never need 4wd,its something else to pee oil everywhere[like it is now]

i may still come to my sense and keep trannys as is yet

anyone got a good v8 + bits near kent ?
 
'Tis your vehicle so obviously you can do what you want with it. But I just struggle to see the appeal of a Land Rover that can't go off road. And imagine how embarrassing it would be to get stuck in the snow with it. Lol

If it's for a powerful V8, then such an engine will just go better in something lighter such as a sports car and handle better. Also RWD and an open diff in a high up vehicle is unlikely to promote friendly handling. I had a 4.0 Cherokee that could run rwd or 4wd with either the centre diff locked or open. In the wet it was really rather wild and a handful as rwd. But AWD really let you use all of the 190hp.
 
Remove the front output housing from the transfer box and lock the high low selector shaft by fitting a solid pin in place of the spring and ball [probably worth drilling the shaft part way].Cut the protruding shafts down , get the alloy housing shortened and a plate welded across to close it off.
 
right then,for now ,im just gonna bolt a v8 to the series box

got a phillips milner adaptor ring, i think ive found a spigot bush on ebay

anyone know of a bolt on clutch ,so i dont have to drill flywheel,did read somewhere sd1 FW takes a s2a diesel pressure plate..........

be gratefull for any tips lads to give my mechcanic,steve
 
hiya lads , still looking for a good engine to bolt to series box
as i said ,got the conversion ring , do i just need the spigot bush or an adaptor plate too?

or does it depend on which engine/flywheel i end up with?

been trying to search google for an indepth guide
wanna make sure ive got the right bits before i hand my baby to my mate whos doing the work,cheers steve
