I have noticed a distinct blowing on the right side of the engine (when looking under the bonnet) so i had a look underneath today and found that the joint between the manifold and the Y pipe on the one bank was leaking quite badly, as it was covered in soot. Is this just a case of taking the bolts out, prising it apart and wacking some exhaust paste in the gap and tightening it up? Or is this not good enough?

Also if putting some paste in will fix it - anyone recommend a good paste?

Cheers Rich

Best to replace the gasket as the joint faces may not be perfect, that's if you have the 'twin pipe' each side system. I have the part number as ETC4524 other wise it's an olive joint at the manifold so a bog standard exhaust assembly paste (the white-ish stuff) will do.
I have assumed you don't have a cat system as the joint is different again, gasket is ESR4524 in my book.

yep i have a cat on both banks of the exhaust

Your not supposed to put any type of paste IN FRONT of the cats, apparently some can get in the cats and bugger em up if your unlucky, saying that i put GUNGUM over the area when it happened to mine, the problem was every couple of weeks it would blow itself out, no matter how hard i tried (i guess its just too big an engine and the pressure becomes too much) in the end i took a gasket down to an exhaust/tire garage that im friendly with and told him i would "sort him a few beers" if he could sort it, (i no longer got a place to do it myself). i went off for an hour or so and hey presto, problem sorted! I never got the gasket back and to be honest i reckon he only nipped the bolts up as it looked pretty much like i left it (covered in gungum) I didnt ask and he didnt tell me, it sorted now though either way. And for only the price of a few beers!

Although it's not an ideal time of year to do it, you're better off taking the front pipe assembly off completely and getting the joint faces cleaned up, and then fit new gaskets.

Using GunGum is OK for a while, but it's going to fail again eventually, and possibly with damage to the flanges if there is a persistent leak there.
