V6 Crankshaft Sprocket Failure

The above shows said sprocket.
Our immaculate V6 Premium suddenly stopped,
starter would spin engine but not start, code reader showed 'camshaft position sensor'. Car transported home where we tried to start it as sensors sometimes revive on cooling down. No joy and starter jammed with engine now locked solid and all the coolant disappeared.
Strip down reveals the loose flange on the sprocket has chewed up the belt and upset the timing. Diagnosis is a broken liner. Car will now be scrapped.
End of dismal story.
Incidentally belt was changed two months ago, I wonder if the sprocket is the same on 1.8's. Pity about the lovely leather seats!
 
Thats a real shame after all the service work thats recently been done on it. :(
 
Pic of the same cog on mine below. Whats the tensioner like? Is it still able to hold tension if it were all in place and ok. Do you have a pic of the damage done to the belt?

Is the straw stuff in the pic the string in the belt? If so is that more of a belt failure first, then the cog damage, rather than the cog being the starting fault?

The 'straw stuff' has come from the edge of the belt and in filling the root of the belt teeth has raised the belt up on the crank cog so causing slippage. (IMHO)

I have a little question, the timing belt have damage on both sides? My freelander have damage on the external side from the timing belt but the real problem was the hidraulic tensor failure. I made an extensive review and found damage too in the both exhaust camshaft sprocket. I try to put a picture from the exhaust camshaft damage.

Sorry to drag up an old tread but to me it looks like the belt has been overloaded. The tensioner piston assembly is good and reliable but the pivoting roller is often badly adjusted so it drags on it's own carrier (causing heat from the friction and drag) or the set screw is'nt tight enough so allows the roller to move in service so causing friction and heat!! I'v done many KV6 belt and have seen badly adjusted tensioner rollers many times even new ones straight out the box!!
