Help, I’m looking to purchase a 1987 Land Rover 90 2.5TD. All numbers match with V5, vin and chassis. Crossed checked with DVLA. The issue is that the verified vin/chassis number is for a 1984 model. Is this common? One original owner first registered in 1987..Number is SALLDVAB7AA....

It’s been on a farm for the past 30 years of ownership no visible modifications...original chassis. It’s peculiar.

Pre-registration and used as run-around by the dealer, but not sold for 3 years?

We had a Ford Escort like this many years ago.

Would that be the case? I’m looking to export it since all numbers match and motor is like year for a 87 but the chassis number reads as if it were a 84 2.5TD which doesn’t exist. Right?

What your saying is your looking to purchasing a vehicle registered in 1987 but it's a 1984 model... so I don't see how that can make it having a pre-registration.
If a vehicle then was used on private land there no need to register it, or it could have been use on the streets with trade plates, it may have been a Royal's vehicle as they were not registered then, worth a few bob if it was but then it would be immaculate.

If your planning to export it to the USA, then I wouldn’t risk it, we’ve all seen what they do to imports they don’t like the look of.
It’s not unheard of for the numbers not to match the year, but sometimes we don’t know why! And no, the 2.5 Turbo Diesel wasn’t around in ‘84.

My 2.5P CSW was first registered in Aug 1988 (E) but has a VIN, chassis no, eng. no/code etc for 1985; the VIN says its a LHD (SALLDVBD8AA*****) yet it's a RHD. It was exported on manufacture to Austria on 3/7/85 then imported and I assume converted to RHD and registered near London in 1988.
2.5TD were produced 1986-89..

I don't think the year identifier in the 90/110 VIN was introduced until 1988.

my 85 is also an A, so 84 to 87 is all one letter.
Car looks to be correct.
Looks good in the pic but then again it might not as there are none there.

The HPI shows a match as well with no discrepancies and between numbers, manufactured 1987 and registered 1987. Thanks everyone.

Nope, “B” covers ‘85-‘87. I have an ‘87 OneTen so can testify this. These are manufactured dates, not registered.

You are right but I understand that the letters refer to model years - A = all models (84-85) except: B = Ser. III CSW or R/R Phase II, or 90/110 face lift to 1987 M/Y (85-87); E=88, F=89, G=90 etc.... rather than actual date of manufacture.
I found the date of manufacture from LR build records.
Engine date code 23/04/85
Build date 18/06/85
Despatch date 03/07/85.
First registered 10/08/88.

Great news. Always a relief when it all checks out especially with the often seemingly random LR numbering and dating system. Perhaps the 2.5TD was a replacement?
Anyway, Happy Rovering :D

My wife’s first mini was registered in Ireland for 3 years and brought over to the uk, reg was 3 years different to the first registered date on v5.

You're right about pre-registration, I was arse about face with it!
