Urgent Help! stuck in a Car Park With a Dead Car

Whoa, whoa... well, that was an adventure. No, the clown didn't get me. Thanks everyone for your suggestions!

My smartphone lost the internet... so not very smart after all... or did the forum go down? I dunno.

After I had paid £12.50 for an overnight parking and about to abandon the car, I gave it another try and guess what - it started instantly. I didn't do anything, it just decided to start. How's that eh?

When I got home I tried to switch off / switch on a couple of times and it started perfectly.

I've had a flat battery before and it always attempts to crank but then just roars and chokes and starts beeping. So, it definitely wasn't a battery. Besides the headlamps were ok.

My understanding is that the clicking sound comes from the connectors, but I might be wrong.

Guess I have to decide what now. If it happens in a place where I can't pay for my stay, I'll just have to get a recovery and that's hundreds of pounds down the drain.

Would changing the coil on a starter be a good idea? Or maybe I should check all the connections that could possibly interrupt ignition? What's the best way of doing that?

What you have described could easily be the result of a poor connection to the battery. Remove the connectors, clean the terminals, grease, reassemble and tighten correctly. I wouldn't be surprised if you found one of the connectors were loose in the process.

Dude... what part of his post "So, it definitely wasn't a battery." did you not understand..?

In his defense, About 70% of flat batteries I go out to I get told by the member 'it's definately not a flat battery'. Just cos his headlights worked (at 10amps) it doesn't mean that a starter motor working at 200 amps is gonna work. A battery can also regenerate to a point. However.....

In this instance I do agree with you that it sounds unlikely that it was a flat battery. It does sound more like an ignition switch, immobiliser spider, starter motor or starter relay or starter flylead fault.

Apologies r..

Me climbing on the high horse again... :behindsofa:

LOL, yeah, good banter!

Well, guys, let's discount the battery theory. My connectors are shiny, lubed and tight as Ekklestone's new GF's ****y. Besides, I know exactly how my car sounds/behaves with a flat battery.

I'll try the fly lead when I get some daylight, although the heck with the light - I will have to try to grope it up because I can only see a very small portion of the starter. Looks like I'll need to remove some pipes to gain access should it comes to replacing things.

theres loads of peeps your way - next time post a HELP fred on here and (interweb being OK) I am sure we can rescue yu some how.

Cheers for that. I keep forgetting that Land Rover is mainstream (not in a bad way) and that there are real people behind forums :D

sounds like ignition switch, Starter fly lead or a starter motor fault.

I'd be starting with the fly lead. (wiggle the small wire that goes to the starter motor).

Thats what mine was doing Ratty. Just a single click when turning the key. Wiggled the wire to starter and it fired up.

my mates did this a few months back it started as an intermitant fault one minute it would start then it wouldn't do anything then after a few days it packed in altogether and turned out to be a cracked pos battery clamp.

I agree
Dirty starter solenoid contacts will produce exackerly the same symptoms too ;)
