Hi,

I'm in a car park with my smartphone and a dead Discovery 1996 TD300 manual, when I turn the key nothing happens, only clicks from the electrical system. Starter doesn't even try to turn.

I whacked it with a hammer but it's all casing... So no pint whacking really.

Any ideas? If I get somebody to push-start me, what gear should I be in? I've never push-started before.

sounds like a flat battery. A jump start or bump start might get it going. How many peps have ya got to do the push start?

The most obvious one here is a dead battery - it would do exactly what you've described.

If you can get a push start, normal range in 2nd gear is probably your best bet. Make sure it's in neutral with the ignition on and ready and engage 2nd and engage the clutch only when it's up to speed.

Good luck!

whacking the starter would normally do the job, although whacking, id say not as hard... this is done as to un stick the solenoid inside, as with time can gunk / stick... so the tap of a say... hammer generally used to free the sticky solenoid inside. you could even try (if its not your battery) put in 1st, & rock it till resistance is met.. this may do the trick to.

I wouldnt say its the battery, as you wouldnt get the clicking.. that to me sounds like the starter motor. are your lights ok if you turn them on?..

Second gear is the best to bump start in.

Could be a flat battery, immobiliser issue, ignition switch, dodgy starter motor, dodgy starter motor fly lead connection etc

i get clicking when my batterys flat. Its the starter motor that clicks but dont turn proper.

Has Bob eaten him or has Rent A Clown got him?  :D

my 300 auto has done this a couple of times. All lights on dash but no ignition. Turned out to be the wires that connect to the starter motor . I think they are spade fittings. Just gave it a waggle and everything back to normal. :)

Whoa, whoa... well, that was an adventure. No, the clown didn't get me. Thanks everyone for your suggestions!

My smartphone lost the internet... so not very smart after all... or did the forum go down? I dunno.

After I had paid £12.50 for an overnight parking and about to abandon the car, I gave it another try and guess what - it started instantly. I didn't do anything, it just decided to start. How's that eh?

When I got home I tried to switch off / switch on a couple of times and it started perfectly.

I've had a flat battery before and it always attempts to crank but then just roars and chokes and starts beeping. So, it definitely wasn't a battery. Besides the headlamps were ok.

My understanding is that the clicking sound comes from the connectors, but I might be wrong.

Guess I have to decide what now. If it happens in a place where I can't pay for my stay, I'll just have to get a recovery and that's hundreds of pounds down the drain.

Would changing the coil on a starter be a good idea? Or maybe I should check all the connections that could possibly interrupt ignition? What's the best way of doing that?

Lol, glad ur ok.. yeah the site did play up last night.. i would look at the connectors to the starter mate, reason why im sticking with that, is my previous did exact same, sometimes after leaving for a few hours, would start.. my assumptions are that the relay or rocker switch in yer starter motor does stick after yeasrs of wear n tear.. hence the hammering.. it can sometimes flick the rocker back inside...
